kõik, mis

Everything That (Kõik, Mis)

Level 4

Kõik, mis ta ütles means everything he said. Estonian always uses mis here, never et.

How It Works

To say everything that, all that or what, Estonian uses a relative clause with mis:

  • kõik, mis – everything that: Kõik, mis ta ütles, oli tõsi.
  • see, mis – what, the thing that: See, mis juhtus, ei ole sinu süü.
  • midagi, mis – something that: Ma nägin midagi, mis mulle meeldis.

English often leaves out that (everything he said), but Estonian always keeps mis, with a comma before it. Do not use et here. Et starts a that-clause after verbs like say and think, not after kõik.

Mis changes its case to fit its own clause, just as in other relative clauses:

  • Kõik, mida sa vajad, on siin. (vajama takes the partitive)
  • Kas sa said aru kõigest, millest me rääkisime? (rääkima takes the elative)
  • Kõik, mis ta ostis, oli kallis. (as a whole object, mis can stand for mille)

In casual speech you may also hear mis where writing has mida. In writing, use the case the verb needs.

People. When kõik means everyone, use kes: Kõik, kes tahavad, võivad tulla.

A whole idea. Mis can also point back to everything said before it, like English which: Ta jäi hiljaks, mis oli imelik. (He was late, which was strange.)

Kõik itself also takes case endings in the main clause: kõigest, kõigele, kõigega.

Examples (6)

  1. Kõik, mis ta ütles, oli tõsi.

    Everything he said was true.

Mis starts the clause. English can leave out that, but Estonian cannot leave out mis.

  2. Kõik, mida sa vajad, on siin.

    Everything you need is here.

Mida is partitive because vajama takes the partitive.

  3. See, mis juhtus, ei ole sinu süü.

What happened is not your fault.

See, mis means what or the thing that.

  4. Me teeme kõik, mis võimalik.

    We will do everything possible.

A fixed phrase. The verb on is left out after mis.

  5. Ta jäi hiljaks, mis oli väga imelik.

He was late, which was very strange.

Mis points back to the whole first clause.

  6. Kas sa said aru kõigest, millest me rääkisime?

Did you understand everything we talked about?

Aru saama needs the elative (kõigest), and rääkima also needs the elative (millest).

Common Mistakes

  • Using et for English that after kõik.

Kõik, et ta ütles, oli tõsi.
Kõik, mis ta ütles, oli tõsi.

After kõik, the clause starts with mis. Et is used after verbs like say and think.

  • Leaving mis in the basic form when the verb needs another case.

Kõik, mis me unistasime, läks täide.
Kõik, millest me unistasime, läks täide.

Unistama takes the elative, so mis becomes millest.

  • Using mis for people.

    Kõik, mis tulid, said kingituse.
    Kõik, kes tulid, said kingituse.

When kõik means everyone, the clause starts with kes.
