Kas sa tahad teed või kohvi? means Do you want tea or coffee? Ma ei tea, kas ta tuleb või mitte means I do not know whether he is coming or not.

How It Works

kas ... või sets up a choice between two options.

  • Choice questions: Kas sa tahad teed või kohvi? The answer names one option: Teed, palun. A plain yes-no question also starts with kas, but it has no või.
  • Either ... or: in a statement, kas goes before the first option: Ma tulen kas täna või homme. Me sõidame kas bussi või rongiga.
  • Whether ... or: a reported question starts with kas: Ma ei tea, kas ta tuleb või mitte. Küsi, kas nad tahavad kala või liha.
  • Or not: või mitte and, in speech, või ei ask for a yes or a no: Kas sa tuled või ei?

Do not put a comma before või. A comma does go before a reported question: Ma ei tea, kas ... Do not mix this pair up with kas või (also written kasvõi), which means even or at least: Ootan kas või õhtuni (I will wait even until evening).

Common Mistakes

  • Using kui for whether, the way English uses if.

    Ma ei tea, kui ta tuleb või mitte.
    Ma ei tea, kas ta tuleb või mitte.

    A reported yes-no question always starts with kas. kui means when, or if in a condition.

  • Leaving out kas in a reported question.

    Ma ei tea, ta tuleb või mitte.
    Ma ei tea, kas ta tuleb või mitte.

    The reported question needs kas at its start, just like the direct question Kas ta tuleb?

  • Putting a comma before või.

    Kas sa tahad teed, või kohvi?
    Kas sa tahad teed või kohvi?

    või does not take a comma when it joins two options.
