Ma käin ujumas kaks korda nädalas means I go swimming twice a week.

How It Works

kord counts occasions, like time in three times.

  • Once: üks kord or just kord. Kord nädalas means once a week.
  • After other numbers, as with any noun, the partitive singular: kaks korda, kolm korda, mitu korda, paar korda.
  • Per period uses the inessive: kaks korda päevas, nädalas, kuus, aastas.
  • Multiplying and comparing: kolm korda kolm, kaks korda suurem (twice as big).

Useful phrases: esimest korda (for the first time), viimast korda (for the last time), veel kord (once more), iga kord (every time), seekord (this time), järgmine kord (next time).

Note the difference between Olen siin esimest korda (I am here for the first time) and See on esimene kord (This is the first time). In the first, the phrase says when; in the second, it is what something is. In casual speech you may also hear esimene kord used like esimest korda, but esimest korda is the standard choice.

kord also means order, as in Kõik on korras (Everything is fine).

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving kord in the nominative after a number.

    Ma olen seal kaks kord käinud.
    Ma olen seal kaks korda käinud.

    After numbers from two up, kord takes the partitive korda.

  • Using the adessive for how often per period.

    Ma käin trennis kaks korda nädalal.
    Ma käin trennis kaks korda nädalas.

    How often per day, week or year uses the inessive: päevas, nädalas, aastas.
