behøver ikke

Need Not (Behøver Ikke)

Level 2

behøver ikke = don't have to / need not.
It removes an obligation, making an action optional.

How It Works

The construction behøver ikke is the standard way to express the absence of necessity. While behøve is a regular verb, it functions similarly to a modal verb in this context.

1. The Negative/Question Constraint (NPI)
When followed by another verb, behøve is a "negative polarity item." This means it is almost only used in negative sentences (with ikke), questions, or with restrictive words like kun (only).

  • Jeg behøver ikke gå. (Correct - negative action)
  • Behøver du gå nu? (Correct - question)
  • Jeg behøver at gå nu. (Unnatural - use Jeg skal gå nu instead)

Note: This rule only applies to verbs. You can freely use behøve in positive sentences with nouns: Jeg behøver din hjælp.

2. The 'at' Rule and Spoken Forms
Traditionally, behøve is followed by at + infinitiv (e.g., behøver ikke at gå). However, in modern Danish, the at is very frequently dropped. In casual speech, you will also hear the form behøves ikke (e.g., Det behøves ikke), which is very common even though it is informal.

3. Alternatives: 'skal ikke'
You can often use skal ikke as a synonym for behøver ikke to express that something isn't necessary: Du skal ikke tænke på det. (You don't need to think about it).

4. Distinction from 'må ikke'
Behøver ikke means you have a choice (optional). Må ikke means you are forbidden (prohibited).

  • Du behøver ikke spise det. = You don't have to eat it (but you can).
  • Du må ikke spise det. = You must not eat it (it is forbidden).

Examples (4)

  1. Du behøver ikke vaske op nu.

You don't have to do the dishes now.

Word by Word: You need not wash up now.

Here, 'at' is omitted before the verb 'vaske', which is very common in spoken Danish.

  2. Det behøver ikke at være så dyrt.

It doesn't have to be that expensive.

Word by Word: It needs not to be so expensive.

This example uses 'at', which is slightly more formal but perfectly correct.

  3. I behøver ikke vente på mig.

You (plural) don't need to wait for me.

Word by Word: You need not wait on me.

Using 'behøver ikke' tells the listeners they are free to leave if they want.

  4. Han behøver ikke komme, hvis han er træt.

He doesn't have to come if he is tired.

Word by Word: He needs not come, if he is tired.

This removes the obligation for him to attend the event.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'må ikke' to mean 'don't have to'.

Du må ikke betale for maden.
Du behøver ikke betale for maden.

In Danish, 'må ikke' means 'must not' (prohibition). If you want to say someone is not required to pay, you must use 'behøver ikke' or 'skal ikke'.

  • Using 'behøve' + verb in positive statements.

    Jeg behøver at sove nu.
Jeg skal sove nu. / Jeg er nødt til at sove nu.

When followed by another verb, 'behøve' is almost exclusively used in negative sentences or questions. For positive statements of necessity regarding actions, use 'skal' or 'er nødt til'.

  • Using 'skal have' to say you need something.

    Different MeaningJeg skal have hjælp.
    Jeg behøver hjælp.

'Jeg skal have hjælp' is a good sentence, but it says you are going to get help. To say 'I need help', use 'behøver' or 'har brug for'. 'Behøve' works well in positive sentences when a noun follows, as in 'Jeg behøver tid' (I need time).
