Because (Fordi)

Level 2

Use fordi to explain 'why' something happens. It is the most common way to say 'because' in Danish.

How It Works

The conjunction fordi is a 'subordinator.' This means it changes how we build the sentence.

1. The S-A-V Rule
In a normal sentence, the verb comes before the adverb (like ikke). However, after fordi, the adverb must come before the verb.
• Main clause: Jeg er ikke træt. (I am not tired.)
• Subordinate clause: ...fordi jeg ikke er træt. (...because I not am tired.)

2. Fronting and Inversion
You can start a sentence with a fordi-clause. When you do this, the main clause that follows must use inversion (Verb-Subject).
• Example: Fordi det regner, bliver vi hjemme. (Because it rains, stay we home.)

3. Fordi vs. For
While both can mean 'because,' for is a coordinating conjunction. It uses normal word order and cannot start a sentence. Fordi is more flexible and is used when the reason is the main point of the sentence.

4. Spoken Danish
In casual speech, you will often hear Danes say fordi at.... While technically redundant, it is very common and acceptable in conversation.

Examples (5)

  1. Jeg bliver hjemme, fordi jeg er syg.

I am staying home because I am sick.

Word by Word: I stay home, because I am sick.

A standard use of 'fordi' where the reason follows the main action.

  2. Han kommer ikke, fordi han ikke har tid.

He isn't coming because he doesn't have time.

Word by Word: He comes not, because he not has time.

Notice how 'ikke' (not) comes before the verb 'har' in the 'fordi'-clause.

  3. Fordi det er koldt, har jeg en jakke på.

Because it is cold, I have a jacket on.

Word by Word: Because it is cold, have I a jacket on.

When 'fordi' starts the sentence, the main clause uses inversion (har jeg).

  4. Jeg er glad, fordi solen skinner.

I am happy because the sun is shining.

Word by Word: I am happy, because sun-the shines.

A simple causal link using 'fordi'.

  5. Vi spiser nu, fordi vi er sultne.

We are eating now because we are hungry.

Word by Word: We eat now, because we are hungry.

Using 'fordi' to answer the question 'hvorfor?' (why?).

Common Mistakes

  • Placing the adverb after the verb in the 'fordi'-clause.

Jeg kommer ikke, fordi jeg er ikke rask.
Jeg kommer ikke, fordi jeg ikke er rask.

In subordinate clauses introduced by 'fordi', adverbs like 'ikke' must come before the verb.

  • Forgetting inversion when the 'fordi'-clause comes first.

Fordi jeg er træt, jeg går i seng.
Fordi jeg er træt, går jeg i seng.

Danish follows the V2 rule; if the 'fordi'-clause is the first element, the verb must be the second element in the sentence.

  • Starting a sentence with 'for' instead of 'fordi'.

For det regner, tager jeg en paraply.
Fordi det regner, tager jeg en paraply.

The conjunction 'for' cannot be used at the beginning of a sentence; you must use 'fordi' in that position.

Learn This First

To use 'fordi' correctly, you need to understand how to form basic sentences and how to answer 'why' questions. Since 'fordi' connects a main clause to a subordinate clause, familiarity with Danish word order (V2) is essential to ensure the verb remains in the correct position.
