bychom / bysme

Standard Bychom Versus Non-standard Bysme

Level 4

In Czech, "we would" is expressed using the conditional auxiliary. The official standard form is bychom, but in everyday spoken Czech, almost everyone uses the non-standard form bysme.

How It Works

As standalone second-position clitics, these auxiliaries typically occupy the second slot in a clause. However, when fused with conjunctions like aby and kdyby (forming abychom, kdybychom), the resulting word usually occupies the first slot of the dependent clause.

The Hypercorrect Trap:
A very common error—even among native speakers—is writing by jsme (or byjsme). Why does this happen? In casual spoken Czech, the j in jsme and jste is silent (pronounced sme, ste). Because the informal bysme sounds exactly like by sme, native speakers mistakenly reconstruct it in writing as two words using the present tense of the verb být. However, the present conditional uses a unique historical paradigm (bych, bys, by, bychom, byste, by). Writing by jsme is universally rejected as a severe spelling and grammar mistake. It must always be written as one word. This exact same hypercorrect mistake frequently occurs in the second person plural, where people incorrectly write by jste instead of the correct byste. Note that for the second person plural, byste is the only correct form for both formal and informal registers, and no informal equivalent exists. It also occurs in the singular, where people write by jsem instead of the correct bych and by jsi instead of the correct bys. These hypercorrect spelling errors frequently occur with conjunctions fused with the auxiliary as well (e.g., writing aby jsme, kdyby jste, or aby jsi). Remember that they must always be written as one word (abychom/abysme, kdybyste, abys). While you might hear some native speakers say bysem (and abysem / kdybysem) instead of bych, this form is highly stigmatized and associated with children or uneducated speech. As a learner, you should always stick to bych for the first person singular in all registers, even when using bysme in the plural. Additionally, when bys meets the reflexive pronouns se or si in the clitic cluster, the -s from bys detaches and fuses with the reflexive pronoun, resulting in by ses and by sis (e.g., koupil by sis, not *koupil by jsi si or *koupil bys si). Crucially, this fusion also applies to conjunctions, resulting in forms like aby ses and kdyby sis (never *abys se or *kdybys si).

Stylistic Balance:
As an advanced learner, you need to navigate these registers to become proficient in Czech. Use bychom in essays, business emails, and formal presentations. Switch to bysme when chatting with friends to sound natural and fluent.

Examples (6)

  1. Rádi bychom si rezervovali stůl pro tři.

We would like to reserve a table for three.

Word by Word: Gladly we-would ourselves reserved table for three.

Standard and formal. Appropriate for calling a restaurant or writing an email.

  2. Chtěli bysme přijít už v pět, ale nevím, jestli to stihneme.

We would like to arrive as early as five, but I don't know if we'll make it.

Word by Word: Wanted we-would arrive already at five, but not-I-know, if it we-catch.

Casual and spoken. The use of 'bysme' makes this sound like a natural conversation between friends.

  3. Co bychom dělali, kdybychom měli více času?

What would we do if we had more time?

Word by Word: What we-would did, if-we-would had more time?

Standard written Czech. Notice how 'bychom' fuses with 'kdyby' to form 'kdybychom'.

  4. Co bysme dělali, kdybysme měli víc času?

What would we do if we had more time?

Word by Word: What we-would did, if-we-would had more time?

Common spoken Czech. 'Bysme' fuses with 'kdyby' to form 'kdybysme'. Also note the colloquial 'víc' instead of 'více'.

  5. Musíme si pospíšit, abychom nepřišli pozdě.

We must hurry so that we don't arrive late.

Word by Word: We-must ourselves hurry, so-that-we-would not-arrived late.

Standard written Czech. 'Bychom' fuses with 'aby' to form 'abychom'.

  6. Musíme si pospíšit, abysme nepřišli pozdě.

We must hurry so that we don't arrive late.

Word by Word: We-must ourselves hurry, so-that-we-would not-arrived late.

Common spoken Czech. 'Bysme' fuses with 'aby' to form 'abysme'.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the hypercorrect 'by jsme' instead of 'bychom' or 'bysme'.

    Chtěli by jsme tam jít.
    Chtěli bychom tam jít.

The conditional auxiliary is a single word. It does not use the present tense of 'být' (jsme). Writing 'by jsme' is a severe grammatical error. In writing, always use 'bychom' (or 'bysme' if writing informal dialogue).

  • Using 'bychom' in highly informal spoken contexts, such as at a pub with close friends.

Different MeaningDali bychom si ještě dvě piva.
Dali bysme si ještě dvě piva.

While grammatically correct, using 'bychom' in casual settings sounds unnaturally stiff or bookish. Native speakers overwhelmingly prefer 'bysme' in everyday speech.
