Literary Vocatives
Literary and emotional address keeps old vocatives such as Боже, Господи and друже: Боже мой! (My God!)
How It Works
1. Forms with a consonant change.
- Бог → Боже (God): Боже мой!
- друг → друже (friend, comrade)
- човек → човече (man, fellow): also common in everyday speech, as in Човече, какво правиш?
- отец → отче (father, in church language): Отче наш (Our Father, the Lord's Prayer)
2. Other literary and emotional forms. Господи (Lord), сине (son), брате and братко (brother), юнако (brave young man), народе (people, nation), царю (king). Many feminine nouns in -а take -о: Родино (homeland), девойко (maiden).
3. Where you meet them. Prayers and exclamations (Господи, помогни ми!), folk songs, poetry, speeches and letters. In fixed exclamations such as Боже мой! and Господи! they are everyday speech. Elsewhere they sound elevated, warm or old-fashioned.
4. Only for direct address. A vocative is used only when you speak to someone. When you talk about them, use the ordinary form: Бог ще ни помогне.
5. Related patterns. The same consonant changes appear in verbs (see мога/можеш: смяна на съгласната). Other fossilized old forms are covered in остатъци от падежни форми.

Common Mistakes
Adding -е without changing the consonant.

Keeping к before -е.
Човеке, чакай!Човече, чакай!Before the vocative -е, к becomes ч.
Using the vocative when talking about someone.
Боже ще ни помогне.Бог ще ни помогне.Боже is only for addressing God directly. As the subject of a sentence, use the ordinary form Бог.
