sretan rođendan

Wishing Someone Well

Level 1

Good wishes use sretan, sretna or sretno, matching the noun that follows.

How It Works

A good wish is a short adjective plus a noun. The adjective changes to match the noun.

GenderAdjectiveExample
masculinesretanSretan rođendan! Sretan put!
femininesretnaSretna nova godina!
neutersretnoSretno! (good luck)
pluralsretniSretni praznici!

You can add a person: Sretan ti rođendan, Selma! The short word ti sits right after the adjective.

Many families also use Sretan Bajram or Sretan Božić for holidays, with the same pattern.

You can reply to a wish with Hvala! or Hvala, i tebi! when the wish fits you too, such as Sretna nova godina.

Examples (4)

  1. Sretan rođendan, Haris!

    Happy birthday, Haris!

    Rođendan is masculine, so sretan.

  2. Sretan put!

    Have a good trip!

    Put is masculine, too.

  3. Sretna nova godina!

    Happy New Year!

    Godina is feminine, so sretna.

  4. Sretni praznici, svima!

    Happy holidays, everyone!

    Praznici is plural, so sretni.

Common Mistakes

  • Learners often use one form of the adjective for every wish.

    Sretna rođendan!
    Sretan rođendan!

The adjective must match the gender of the noun: rođendan is masculine.
