What This Course Teaches

Foundations

You will learn the standard Bosnian of Sarajevo and central Bosnia, written in Latin letters.

How It Works

Bosnian has a standard form that people use in school, news and books. This course follows the standard as it is spoken in Sarajevo and central Bosnia.

Three choices run through every lesson:

  • Latin letters. Bosnian can also be written in Cyrillic, but the lessons show Latin.
  • Ijekavian forms. The old vowel jat shows up as ije or je: mlijeko, lijep, rijeka.
  • Everyday Bosnian words. You will see kafa, hljeb, sedmica and historija.

Some words have more than one good form, such as kafa and kahva, or lako and lahko. Poppy teaches the common one first and tells you about the others. People in other towns may use different words, and that is fine.

Examples (4)

  1. Ja sam iz Tuzle.

    I am from Tuzla.

Latin letters and a plain present sentence.

  2. Mlijeko i kafa, molim.

    Milk and coffee, please.

    Mlijeko is the ijekavian form.

  3. Gdje je rijeka?

    Where is the river?

Gdje and rijeka both show the ijekavian vowel.

  4. Sedmica ima sedam dana.

    A week has seven days.

Sedmica is the everyday word for week.
