Verbal Nouns in -nje
-nje names an action.
How It Works
| verb | noun |
|---|---|
| čitati (read) | čitanje (reading) |
| pisati (write) | pisanje (writing) |
| učiti (learn) | učenje (learning) |
| putovati (travel) | putovanje (trip) |
The vowel before -nje often changes: -ati verbs give -anje, and -iti verbs usually give -enje. Verbs in -ovati keep it: putovati putovanje. A few are irregular, so learn each noun with its verb.
These nouns are neuter and decline like pitanje. The plural is čitanja, pisanja, učenja. In the genitive plural, the ending is the same: učenja.
Verbal nouns are good for titles and general statements: Učenje jezika traži vrijeme. They say what an activity is without a subject.
In Bosnian, you can often use a plain infinitive too: Volim čitati and Volim čitanje are both used, but the first is more common in speech.
