uprkos, usprkos i unatoč
Uprkos, Usprkos and Unatoč
Same meaning, different forms by standard.
How It Works
These three words mean "despite". The case is the same, usually the dative.
| Form | Where you meet it |
|---|---|
| uprkos | the usual Bosnian form, in speech and writing |
| usprkos | a variant that is also used in Croatian; it appears in Bosnian texts too |
| unatoč | mostly Croatian; you will see it in Croatian news |
A sentence with each: Uprkos kiši idemo na izlet. The other two can replace uprkos in that sentence without changing the meaning.
None of the three is wrong. They are choices that tell you something about the writer's standard or region. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country where Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian speakers share towns and offices, so you will hear all of them.
Use uprkos in your own writing for Bosnian. When you read a Croatian site, such as a newspaper from Zagreb, expect unatoč, and do not be surprised by it.
