Plural of Neuter Nouns

Level 1

Neuter plurals usually end in -a.

How It Works

SingularPlural
selosela
pismopisma
moremora
pitanjepitanja
imeimena
dijetedjeca

The pattern is simple, so most new neuter nouns are easy: okno becomes okna, and polje becomes polja.

Some neuter nouns in -me add -en- before the plural ending: ime imena, vrijeme vremena. Notice that vrijeme loses its ije in the plural. Dijete has a plural of its own, djeca, which declines like a feminine singular noun but takes plural agreement: djeca su mala, moja djeca.

The adjective and verb follow the plural too: mala sela, sela su mala.

Examples (4)

  1. Sela su mala.

    The villages are small.

    Selo becomes sela.

  2. Pisma su na stolu.

The letters are on the table.

    Pismo becomes pisma.

  3. Pitanja su laka.

    The questions are easy.

    Pitanje becomes pitanja.

  4. Imena su važna.

    Names are important.

Ime adds -en- and becomes imena.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the singular ending.

    Selo su mala.
    Sela su mala.

The noun and adjective both take the plural -a.
