Here, There and Here Is

Тут = here, там = there. Вось points something out: Вось мой дом. (Here is my house.)

How It Works

1. Тут and там: where something is. They answer дзе?:

  • Мая кватэра тут. (My apartment is here.)
  • Там стаіць мая машына. (My car is parked over there.)

In relaxed speech you may hear тутака and тамака with the same meaning.

2. Сюды and туды: where to. For movement to a place, Belarusian uses different words, which answer куды?: Ідзі сюды! (Come here!) Мы ідзём туды. (We are going there.)

3. Вось: presenting and pointing. Вось is a particle, not a verb. It is followed by the thing you show, in the nominative:

  • Вось мой дом. (Here is my house.)
  • Вось твая кава. (Here is your coffee.)
  • Вось і аўтобус! (Here comes the bus! / The bus is here at last!)
  • Вось так. (Like this. / That's it.)

Do not add a verb such as ёсць after вось; the particle already does the work.

Avoid Russian words. The Belarusian words are тут and вось, not Russian здесь and вот.

    For movement to this place, "here" is сюды, not тут.

Common Mistakes

  • Using тут to mean "to this place".

    Ідзі тут!
    Ідзі сюды!

    Тут means "in this place", so Ідзі тут would mean "walk here, in this place". To call someone over, use сюды.

  • Using Russian вот instead of вось.

    Вот мой дом.
    Вось мой дом.

    The Belarusian particle is вось.

  • Using Russian здесь instead of тут.

    Я жыву здесь.
    Я жыву тут.

    The Belarusian word for "here" is тут.
