Basic Word Order
Neutral order is subject – verb – object: Ганна чытае кнігу. (Hanna is reading a book.)
How It Works
Neutral order. In an ordinary statement the subject comes before the verb and the object after it: Ганна чытае кнігу. Adjectives normally come before their noun: цікавая кніга (an interesting book). Time and place words often open the sentence: Заўтра мы едзем у Брэст.
Endings carry the roles. Кнігу ends in -у, which marks it as the object (see the accusative for the direct object). Ганна is in the nominative, the subject form (see the nominative for the subject). So Кнігу чытае Ганна still means that Hanna reads the book. When the two nouns look the same as subject and object, as many neuter nouns do, the first one is read as the subject: Воблака засланяе сонца. (A cloud is covering the sun.)
New information goes last. Belarusian uses word order to show what is new. Кнігу чытае Ганна answers Who is reading the book? (it is Hanna). You will study this in word order for topic and new information.
Pronouns. An object pronoun often comes before the verb in everyday speech: Я цябе кахаю. (I love you.)
Questions usually start with the question word, and the rest keeps its order: Дзе ты жывеш? Yes-no questions can start with ці.

Common Mistakes
Relying on word order and forgetting to change the object's ending.
Ганна чытае кніга.Ганна чытае кнігу.Position does not mark the object; the ending does. A feminine noun in -а takes -у as a direct object.
