Planned Duration with На

Level 3Sounds Like na + vínavalʹny térmínu

Use на + accusative for how long something is meant to last: Я еду ў Мінск на тыдзень (I am going to Minsk for a week).

How It Works

1. A planned length of time. На + accusative tells how long a stay, loan or result is meant to last. It often follows verbs of going, coming, taking, giving or renting:

  • Я еду ў Мінск на тыдзень. (I am going to Minsk for a week.)
  • Ён узяў кнігу на дзень. (He borrowed the book for a day.)
  • Мы здымаем кватэру на месяц. (We are renting a flat for a month.)

2. The accusative forms. Masculine time words stay the same: дзень, тыдзень, месяц, год. Feminine words in -а take -у: гадзіна → на гадзіну, хвілінка → на хвілінку. Ноч stays ноч. With numbers: на два тыдні, на пяць дзён. See the accusative.

3. Three ways to talk about time.

  • No preposition: how long an action actually went on. Я жыў у Мінску тыдзень. (I lived in Minsk for a week.)
  • На: how long the result is planned to last. Я прыехаў у Мінск на тыдзень. (I came to Minsk for a week.)
  • За: how long it took to finish. Я прачытаў кнігу за тыдзень. (I read the book in a week.)

A verb like прыехаць (to arrive) happens in a moment, so it cannot take a bare length of time. The time you plan to stay needs на.

4. Do not mix it up with на тыдні. На + locative means during: на гэтым тыдні (this week), на наступным тыдні (next week). На тыдзень means for a week.

5. Plans and schedules. The same meaning appears with nouns: план на тыдзень (a plan for the week), прагноз на заўтра (the forecast for tomorrow).

Examples (6)

  1. Я еду ў Мінск на тыдзень.

I am going to Minsk for a week.

Тыдзень is masculine and inanimate, so it keeps its dictionary form.

  2. Ён узяў кнігу на дзень.

He borrowed the book for a day.

The book is meant to stay with him for one day.

  3. Мы здымаем кватэру на месяц.

We are renting a flat for a month.

  4. Бабуля прыехала да нас на два тыдні.

Grandma came to stay with us for two weeks.

The planned length of her visit.

  5. Я выйду на хвілінку.

I will step out for a minute.

Хвілінка → хвілінку in the accusative.

  6. Зачыні акно на ноч.

Close the window for the night.

Ноч is a feminine noun that keeps the same form in the accusative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a bare time phrase with a verb of arrival.

    Я прыехаў у Мінск тыдзень.
Я прыехаў у Мінск на тыдзень.

Arriving happens in a moment, so the length of the planned stay needs на.

  • Using the locative на тыдні to mean for a week.

Я еду ў Мінск на тыдні.
Я еду ў Мінск на тыдзень.

На тыдні means during the week. For a week needs the accusative: на тыдзень.

  • Leaving a feminine time word in the nominative.

    Я выйду на хвіліна.
    Я выйду на хвіліну.

На takes the accusative here, so хвіліна becomes хвіліну.
