-(r)en baitan
Within: Baitan
Indar handia dugu geure baitan. (We have great strength within ourselves.) Zure baitan da. (It is up to you.)
How It Works
1. Form. genitive + baitan: nire baitan, zure baitan, gure baitan, bere baitan, lagunaren baitan. Older texts also put it after a plain noun or name: Jainkoa baitan.
2. Other place endings. baitan answers where (like -n). The same word takes the other place endings: baitara (to, into), baitatik (from), baitako (of, within).
3. Common expressions.
- X-ren baitan izan / egon: to be up to X: Zure baitan da hartzea edo uztea.
- bere baitan esan: to say to oneself
- bere baitara etorri / bihurtu: to come to, to recover consciousness
- bere baitan: inside oneself, in itself
4. With things. News writing often uses baitan with institutions and documents: Europar Batasunaren baitan (within the European Union), hitzarmenaren baitan (under the agreement). For expressions such as perpausaren baitan (within the sentence), Euskaltzaindia recommends plainer words: perpausean or perpausaren barruan.
Tip: When a person is the place, baitan is the formal choice and -gan the neutral one: zure baitan = zugan.

Common Mistakes
Making the verb agree with the person in the baitan phrase.
Zure baitan zaude erabakitzea.Zure baitan dago erabakitzea. The thing that is up to you, erabakitzea (deciding), is the subject, so the verb is third person: dago. zu is only inside the baitan phrase.
