This and That With Endings
hau becomes hon-, hori becomes horr-, hura becomes har- before an ending: honek, horri, haren, etxe honetan (in this house), herri horretara (to that town).
How It Works
Singular forms.
- nork: honek, horrek, hark
- nori: honi, horri, hari
- noren: honen, horren, haren
- norekin: honekin, horrekin, harekin
- non: honetan, horretan, hartan
- nora: honetara, horretara, hartara
- nondik: honetatik, horretatik, hartatik
Plural forms. Drop the -k and add the plural ending: hauei, hauen, hauekin, hauetan; horiei, horietan; haiei, haiekin, haietan. The doer form is the same as the plain plural: Ume hauek hori egin dute (These children have done that).
With a noun. The noun stays bare and the ending goes on the demonstrative: etxe honetan (in this house), mutil horrek (that boy, as a doer), neska hari (to that girl), urte hartan (in that year). Time phrases use the same forms: une honetan (at this moment), garai hartan (in those days).
On their own. The forms also work as pronouns: Honek ez du funtzionatzen (This one does not work). hark and haren are the same words you know as the doer he or she and his or her. In speech you may hear shortened hontan and hortan, but the standard forms are honetan and horretan.
Examples (6)
- Etxe honetan bizi naiz.

- Mutil horrek oso ondo abesten du.

- Neska hari opari bat erosi diot.
I have bought a present for that girl.
hari: to that girl.
- Herri horretara joan nahi dut.
I want to go to that town.
- Garai hartan Bilbon bizi ginen.
In those days we lived in Bilbao.
- Nire alaba ume hauekin jolasten da.
My daughter plays with these children.
hauek drops -k before -ekin: hauekin.
Common Mistakes
Putting the ending on the noun as well.
Etxean honetan bizi naiz.Etxe honetan bizi naiz. The ending goes only on the last word of the phrase, which is the demonstrative. The noun stays bare: etxe honetan.
Forgetting the doer ending.
Mutil hori oso ondo abesten du.Mutil horrek oso ondo abesten du.abestu takes a doer with -k. On a demonstrative, hori becomes horrek.
Adding -k to hura instead of using its stem.
Gizon hurak ez daki.Gizon hark ez daki.hura changes to har- before an ending, so the doer form is hark, not hurak.
