agur / gero arte / bihar arte
Saying Goodbye
Say agur when you leave, or name the next meeting with arte (until): gero arte, bihar arte.
How It Works
- Agur: goodbye. It also closes letters and emails.
- Gero arte: see you later (later until).
- Bihar arte: see you tomorrow (tomorrow until).
- Ikusi arte: see you (until seeing).
- Laster arte: see you soon (soon until).
- Hurrengora arte: until next time.
The word arte always follows the word it goes with. Later you will use the same word to say until with verbs. See until: -tu arte.
To add warmth, say Ondo izan! (Take care!). People often combine several phrases: Agur, Miren! Bihar arte!
The dictionary lists agur for both meeting and leaving someone, as in Agur, jauna (Good day, sir), but in everyday speech it is mostly a goodbye. For hello, use kaixo.
