beste
Other: Beste
beste + noun + bat = another: beste kafe bat (another coffee). beste + noun + article = the other: beste etxea (the other house). Without a noun: bestea, besteak.
How It Works
Before the noun. Adjectives follow the noun (etxe handi bat), but beste goes first: beste etxe bat. The article or bat still comes at the end of the whole phrase: beste etxe handi bat (another big house).
Meaning depends on what closes the phrase.
- beste ... bat: another. Beste kafe bat, mesedez.
- beste ... -a: the other. beste aldea (the other side)
- beste ... -ak: the other ones. beste ikasleak (the other students)
- beste + number: more. beste bi egun (two more days)
- beste ... batzuk: some other. beste lagun batzuk
On its own. bestea (the other one), besteak (the others), beste bat (another one), beste batzuk (some others). It takes endings like any noun phrase: besteari, besteekin, besteen. Hau ez, bestea! (Not this one, the other one!)
With indefinite words. beste also comes before words like zerbait and inor: beste zerbait (something else), beste nonbait (somewhere else), Ez dago beste inor (There is nobody else). See norbait, zerbait, nonbait, noizbait and inor, ezer, inon, inoiz.
