Literary Word Order

Level 6

Put the verb first to move a story along: Etorri zen azkenean gure laguna (Our friend came at last). The words after the verb are background.

How It Works

1. Neutral order. Gure laguna azkenean etorri zen. The focus goes before the verb; see subject-object-verb word order and focus (galdegaia) before the verb.

2. Verb first. When what happened is the new information, the verb can start the sentence: Etorri zen azkenean gure laguna. Joan ziren, eta ez ziren itzuli. This order is common in narration. With synthetic verbs, affirmative ba- often leads: Badator negua.

3. After the verb. Known or long parts can follow the verb: Atzo ikusi nuen asto bat betaurrekoekin. (Yesterday I saw a donkey wearing glasses.) See topic and focus.

4. Poetic inversion. In poetry and song, the auxiliary can come before the main verb to stress the focus: Txakurrek hezurrak dituzte jaten, instead of hezurrak jaten dituzte. Many speakers do not use this in everyday talk. Verse also does this to place a rhyme; see verse forms (bertsoak).

5. What does not change.

  • In affirmative sentences, only small particles such as omen, ote or al can come between the main verb and the auxiliary: Etorri omen zen.
  • In negative sentences, ez + the auxiliary comes before the main verb, and other words can stand between them: Ez zen gure laguna etorri.
  • A question word still goes right before the verb: see question word before the verb.

Tip: When a sentence starts with the verb, read it as "what happened next", and treat what follows as background.

Examples (6)

  1. Etorri zen azkenean gure laguna.

    Our friend came at last.

The verb comes first because the arrival is the news.

  2. Joan ziren, eta ez ziren itzuli.

They left, and they did not come back.

A narrative sentence led by the verb.

  3. Atzo ikusi nuen asto bat betaurrekoekin.

Yesterday I saw a donkey wearing glasses.

The long phrase asto bat betaurrekoekin follows the verb.

  4. Txakurrek hezurrak dituzte jaten.

It is bones that dogs eat.

Poetic order: the auxiliary comes before jaten to stress hezurrak. Everyday speech says hezurrak jaten dituzte.

  5. Badator negua.

    Winter is coming.

ba- + the synthetic verb leads; the subject follows.

  6. Ez zen gure laguna etorri.

    Our friend did not come.

In a negative sentence, ez + zen comes before the main verb, and etorri goes to the end.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a word between the main verb and the auxiliary.

    Etorri gure laguna zen azkenean.
    Etorri zen azkenean gure laguna.

In affirmative sentences, etorri and zen stay together. Only small particles like omen or al can come between them.

  • Moving a question word after the verb.

    Etorri zen nor?
    Nor etorri zen?

Freer word order does not apply to question words. nor must go right before the verb.
