goazen / dezagun

Let's

Level 3

Goazen! means let's go. For other verbs use the radical plus gaitezen or dezagun: Has gaitezen! (Let's begin!), Egin dezagun! (Let's do it!).

How It Works

Goazen. The verb joan has its own let's form: Goazen! (Let's go!), Goazen etxera! (Let's go home!). Compare Goaz etxera, which just says We are going home. See Going (noa, zoaz, doa).

Other verbs. Use the verb radical plus a we form of the auxiliary:

  • naiz verbs: gaitezen. Has gaitezen! (Let's begin!), Joan gaitezen (Let's go).
  • dut verbs: dezagun. Ikus dezagun (Let's see), Egin dezagun! (Let's do it!).
  • dut verbs with a plural object: ditzagun. Ikus ditzagun adibideak (Let's look at the examples).

These are the same forms as in so-that clauses, used on their own.

Let's not. Put ez first and the auxiliary right after it: Ez dezagun ahaztu (Let's not forget). See Don't.

Examples (6)

  1. Goazen etxera!

    Let's go home!

goazen is the special let's form of joan.

  2. Has gaitezen!

    Let's begin!

  3. Ikus dezagun.

    Let's see.

  4. Egin dezagun!

    Let's do it!

  5. Ikus ditzagun adibideak.

    Let's look at the examples.

adibideak is plural, so dezagun becomes ditzagun.

  6. Ez dezagun ahaztu.

    Let's not forget.

Common Mistakes

  • Using dezagun with a verb that takes naiz.

    Joan dezagun!
    Joan gaitezen!

joan takes naiz, so its let's form uses gaitezen. Goazen! is also right.

  • Leaving off the final -n.

    Ikus dezagu.
    Ikus dezagun.

The let's form always ends in -n: dezagun, gaitezen, ditzagun.

  • Using goaz (we go) when you mean let's go.

    Goaz etxera!
    Goazen etxera!

Goaz etxera means We are going home. For let's go, add -en: goazen.
