Hundreds and Thousands

Level 2

ehun (100), berrehun (200), hirurehun (300), laurehun (400), bostehun (500), up to bederatziehun (900). Then mila (1,000), bi mila (2,000) and milioi bat (a million).

How It Works

The hundreds. Each one is written as one word.

  • 100 ehun
  • 200 berrehun
  • 300 hirurehun
  • 400 laurehun
  • 500 bostehun
  • 600 seiehun
  • 700 zazpiehun
  • 800 zortziehun
  • 900 bederatziehun

Note berrehun, not bi ehun, and the -r- in hirurehun and laurehun.

Thousands and millions. mila (1,000), bi mila (2,000), hamar mila (10,000), ehun mila (100,000). A million is milioi bat; milioi works like a noun, so two million is bi milioi. For exactly a hundred or a thousand, say just ehun or mila: ehun bat and mila bat mean about a hundred, about a thousand.

Where eta goes. eta joins the last part to the rest, and only once:

  • ehun eta hogei (120)
  • berrehun eta hogeita bost (225)
  • mila eta berrehun (1,200)
  • mila berrehun eta bi (1,202)
  • bi mila eta hogeita sei (2026)

With nouns and years. Put the number before the noun without the article: hirurehun orri (300 pages), mila lagun (a thousand people); see Numbers and Nouns. Years are read the same way and take -ko or -(e)an: 2026ko iraila, 1995ean; see Dates, Months and Seasons.

Examples (6)

  1. Etxe honek berrehun urte ditu.

This house is two hundred years old.

  2. Txartelak berrehun eta hogeita bost euro balio du.

    The ticket costs 225 euros.

eta goes only before the last part: hogeita bost.

  3. Kontzertura mila lagun etorri dira.

A thousand people have come to the concert.

  4. Herri honetan bi mila eta bostehun biztanle bizi dira.

Two thousand five hundred people live in this town.

  5. Liburuak hirurehun eta berrogeita hamar orri ditu.

    The book has 350 pages.

  6. Mila bederatziehun eta laurogeita hamabostean jaio nintzen.

    I was born in 1995.

The year takes -(e)an: hamabost + -ean.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying two hundred word by word.

    Bi ehun euro ordaindu ditut.
    Berrehun euro ordaindu ditut.

Two hundred has its own form: berrehun. Three hundred and four hundred also change: hirurehun, laurehun.

  • Putting eta in more than one place.

Mila eta berrehun eta bi kilometro egin ditugu.
Mila berrehun eta bi kilometro egin ditugu.

eta appears only once, before the last part of the number. After mila it is dropped when eta already comes later.

  • Adding bat when you mean an exact number.

    Ehun bat euro ordaindu ditut.
    Ehun euro ordaindu ditut.

The intended meaning is exactly a hundred euros. ehun bat means about a hundred, so for the exact number say just ehun.
