Words for Doing Something a Lot

Level 4

The صيغة المبالغة (Intensive Active Participle) transforms a standard 'doer' word into one that implies 'doing it a lot' or 'doing it to an extreme degree.' For example, while a kādhib is a 'liar,' a kadhdhāb is a 'habitual/big liar.'

How It Works

The صيغة المبالغة is a powerful tool in formal Arabic to add descriptive weight to a sentence. It is primarily derived from three-letter (triliteral) verbs, though rare exceptions exist for four-letter verbs (like مِعْطاء from أَعْطَى).

The Five Standard Patterns:

  • فَعّال (Faʿʿāl): The most common pattern for habits. Example: غَفّار (All-Forgiving) from غَفَرَ.
  • مِفْعال (Mifʿāl): Often used for traits or frequent actions. Example: مِقْوال (Very talkative/eloquent) from قالَ.
  • فَعُول (Faʿūl): Often describes a state of being. Example: صَبُور (Very patient) from صَبَرَ.
  • فَعِيل (Faʿīl): Used to emphasize the intensity or frequency of an action. Note that this pattern overlaps significantly with the Lasting Qualities (Sifah Mushabbahah); however, while the Sifah Mushabbahah denotes a permanent attribute, the intensive form emphasizes the abundance of the action. Example: رَحِيم (Very merciful) from رَحِمَ.
  • فَعِل (Faʿil): Used for temporary or alert states. Example: حَذِر (Very cautious) from حَذِرَ.

Grammatical Function (Conditions of Action):
These nouns can behave like verbs and take a Direct Object in the Accusative case. If the word has the definite article (ال), it functions as a verb regardless of time (past, present, or future). If it is indefinite, it must refer to the present or future and meet one of these conditions: it must be preceded by a Subject, a negation, an interrogation, a noun it is describing, a Vocative, or it must function as a Circumstantial Adverb. For example: 'اللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ دُعاءَنا' (God is the Hearer of our prayer), where 'prayer' is the object because 'Hearer' follows the subject 'God'.

Register:
While common in classical texts, these patterns remain productive in Modern Standard Arabic to provide emphasis without using extra adverbs like 'very' or 'frequently'.

Examples (5)

  1. إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ.

    Indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

Word by Word: Indeed Allah [is] All-Forgiving All-Merciful.

This uses the patterns 'Faʿūl' and 'Faʿīl' to show the infinite nature of forgiveness and mercy.

  2. هَذَا الرَّجُلُ مِقْوَالٌ لِلْحَقِّ.

This man is a frequent speaker of the truth.

Word by Word: This the-man [is] a-frequent-speaker for-the-truth.

The pattern 'Mifʿāl' (miqwāl) emphasizes that the man speaks the truth habitually, not just once.

  3. كُنْ حَذِراً مِنْ أَعْدَائِكَ.

Be very cautious of your enemies.

Word by Word: Be cautious from enemies-your.

The pattern 'Faʿil' (ḥadhir) indicates a state of high alertness or extreme caution.

  4. الْكَذَّابُ لا يُصَدِّقُهُ أَحَدٌ.

No one believes a habitual liar.

Word by Word: The-habitual-liar not believes-him anyone.

The pattern 'Faʿʿāl' (kadhdhāb) turns the act of lying into a defining, frequent characteristic.

  5. أَمِعْطَاءٌ الكَرِيمُ مَالَهُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ؟

Does the generous person give his money frequently to the poor?

    Word by Word: Is-frequent-giver the-generous-one money-his to-the-poor?

Here, 'miʿṭāʾ' acts like a verb because it is preceded by an interrogation particle (أَ). Note that 'miʿṭāʾ' is an irregular derivation from the four-letter verb 'aʿṭā'.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming all five patterns can be used for any verb.

    صَبَّار (Sabbār)
    صَبُور (Sabūr)

While both are technically intensive patterns, specific verbs are traditionally tied to specific patterns. You must learn which pattern a verb 'belongs' to through exposure and dictionaries.

  • Using an intensive-pattern word as if it named a tool.

    اشتريتُ مِعْطاءً من السوق.
    اشتريتُ مِذياعاً من السوق.

The pattern مِفْعال has two jobs. It can be an intensive adjective, like مِعْطاء (very generous), or an instrument noun, like مِذياع (radio) and مِفتاح (key). Learn which job a word has.

Learn This First

To understand صيغة المبالغة (Intensive Active Participles), you must first be comfortable with the Arabic system of roots and patterns. Since these words are essentially 'exaggerated' versions of the standard doer word, you should already know how to form the basic Active Participle (اسم الفاعل) from simple three-letter verbs.
