بـ

With and by Means of

Level 2

The particle بـِ (bi-) is a 'proclitic' preposition that attaches to the front of a noun. It primarily translates to 'with' (using a tool) or 'by' (means of transport).

How It Works

The preposition بِـ is one of the most frequent particles in Arabic. Here is how to use it correctly:

  • Attachment: It is always written as part of the following word. For example, bi-qalam becomes بِقَلَمٍ. Note that the Alif of the word اسم is dropped specifically in the complete formula بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ; in other contexts, the Alif is kept, such as بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ or بِاسْمِ الشَّعْبِ.
  • With the Definite Article: When attaching to the definite article (الـ), the Alif is not dropped. It is written as بِالـ (e.g., بِالْقَلَمِ).
  • Instrumental Use: Use it to describe the tool used to perform a task. Example: كَتَبْتُ بِالْقَلَمِ (I wrote with the pen).
  • Means of Transport: Use it to describe how you travel. Example: ذَهَبْتُ بِالسَّيَّارَةِ (I went by car).
  • Physical Contact and Proximity: It is used to indicate physical contact or passing by. Example: مَرَرْتُ بِـ (I passed by). It can also indicate being at a location, though في is used for being inside. Example: بِالْمَطَارِ (at the airport).
  • Exchange and Price: Use it to state the cost of something. Example: بِعَشَرَةِ دُولارَاتٍ (for ten dollars).
  • Emphasis in Negation (The Redundant Bi): In formal Arabic, بِـ is often added to the news (predicate) of ليس to provide emphasis. In this case, the noun becomes المجرور instead of the usual المنصوب. Example: لَيْسَ الأَمْرُ بِصَعْبٍ (The matter is not difficult at all).
  • Transitivity: It can turn an intransitive verb into a transitive one. For example, ذَهَبَ means 'he went', but ذَهَبَ بِـ means 'he took' (literally: he went with).
  • Adverbs of Manner: It is used with nouns to create adverbial phrases. Example: بِسُرْعَةٍ (quickly).
  • Case Marking: As a preposition, it causes the following noun to become المجرور, usually ending in a kasra.

Important Distinction: Do not use بِـ to mean 'in the company of' a person; for that, you must use مع, unless the verb specifically requires 'bi-' as a fixed preposition.

Examples (4)

  1. كَتَبْتُ الرِّسَالَةَ بِالقَلَمِ.

I wrote the letter with the pen.

    Word by Word: I-wrote the-letter with-the-pen.

Here, 'bi-' indicates the instrument (the pen) used to complete the action.

  2. سَافَرْنَا إِلَى المَدِينَةِ بِالحَافِلَةِ.

We traveled to the city by bus.

    Word by Word: We-traveled to the-city by-the-bus.

In this context, 'bi-' indicates the means of transportation.

  3. أَكَلَ الوَلَدُ بِالمِلْعَقَةِ.

The boy ate with the spoon.

Word by Word: Ate the-boy with-the-spoon.

This shows the tool used for eating. Note how 'bi-' attaches directly to the 'Alif' of the definite article.

  4. تَحَدَّثْتُ مَعَهُ بِالهَاتِفِ.

I spoke with him by phone.

    Word by Word: I-spoke with-him by-the-phone.

This demonstrates 'bi-' used for the medium of communication.

Common Mistakes

  • Using "bi-" when you mean "with" in company.

    Different Meaningذَهَبْتُ بِصَدِيقِي إِلَى السُّوقِ.
    ذَهَبْتُ مَعَ صَدِيقِي إِلَى السُّوقِ.

ذهبتُ بصديقي إلى السوق is correct, but it means "I took my friend with me", as if he were carried along. Use مع for companionship. Remember that "bi-" is also required when a specific verb needs it, such as اتصل بـ (to call someone).

  • Dropping the Alif when attaching to the definite article.

    بِلقَلَمِ
    بِالقَلَمِ

Unlike the preposition لِـ, 'bi-' does not cause the Alif of الـ to disappear in writing. The only major exception where the Alif is dropped is in the phrase 'Bismillah' (بِسْمِ الله).

Learn This First

To understand the particle 'بـ', a learner must first recognize it as a prepositional particle that attaches directly to nouns. They need to be familiar with the definite article 'ال' to correctly read and write common combinations like 'بالسيارة', and they must understand the grammatical rule that prepositions change the ending of the following noun to the genitive case.
