الـ + أفعل
The Biggest
The pattern الـ + أفعل (al-af‘al) is the standard way to express the superlative ('the biggest', 'the best') in Modern Standard Arabic. It identifies one entity as the peak of its category.
How It Works
The elative template أفعل (af‘al) is derived from triliteral roots. When the definite article الـ is added, it transforms from a comparison ('bigger than') into a superlative ('the biggest').
1. Agreement Rules:
When you use the الـ + أفعل pattern, the adjective must match the noun it modifies in gender and number:
- Masculine Singular: الولد الأكبر (The oldest boy)
- Feminine Singular: البنت الكبرى (The oldest girl) - Uses the feminine comparative pattern.
- Human Plural: Requires strict agreement in gender and number (e.g., الأولاد الأكبرون - the oldest boys; البنات الكبريات - the oldest girls).
- Non-Human Plural: Non-human plurals take the feminine singular form (e.g., المدن الكبرى - the biggest cities).
2. Case and Inflection:
- While the masculine أفعل is normally a diptote, once the definite article الـ is attached, it behaves like a regular noun and accepts a kasra in the genitive case.
- The feminine فعلى (fu‘lā) ends in an alif maqṣūra, meaning its case endings are hidden (invariable in appearance) as part of estimated inflection.
3. Morphological Variations:
- Geminate Roots: Roots with doubled letters become الأهمّ (the most important).
- Defective Roots: Roots ending in a weak letter become الأعلى (the highest).
4. Usage Note:
Do not use the word من (than) with this pattern. If you are saying 'the biggest', you are not comparing it to one other specific thing using 'than'.
Examples (5)
- هذا هو الحل الأفضل للمشكلة.
This is the best solution to the problem.
Word by Word: This he the-solution the-better for-the-problem.
Here, 'al-afdal' (the best) follows and agrees with the masculine singular noun 'al-hall' (the solution).
- هي البنت الكبرى في الأسرة.
She is the oldest girl in the family.
Word by Word: She the-girl the-biggest in the-family.
Notice the feminine agreement: 'al-kubra' is the feminine form of 'al-akbar' to match 'al-bint'.
- هؤلاء هم الطلاب الأكبرون في المدرسة.
These are the oldest students in the school.
Word by Word: These they the-students the-biggest in the-school.
In formal Arabic, the superlative agrees with human plurals. 'al-akbarun' is the masculine plural form.
- هؤلاء هن البنات الكبريات في الصف.
These are the oldest girls in the class.
Word by Word: These they the-girls the-biggest in the-class.
For human feminine plurals, the form 'al-fu'layat' (al-kubrayat) is used to maintain agreement.
- هذه هي المدن الكبرى في العالم.
These are the biggest cities in the world.
Word by Word: These she the-cities the-biggest in the-world.
Because 'cities' is a non-human plural, the superlative takes the feminine singular form 'al-kubra'.
Common Mistakes
Using 'than' (min) with the definite superlative.
هو الأكبر من أخيه.هو أكبر من أخيه.Standard grammar books do not combine the definite 'al-akbar' with 'min'. To say 'older than his brother', use the indefinite 'akbar min'.
Failing to agree in gender with feminine nouns.
السيارة الأكبرالسيارة الكبرىIn formal Modern Standard Arabic, the definite superlative must agree in gender. The feminine of 'al-akbar' is 'al-kubrā'.
