Form Five: Doing It to Yourself

Level 3

Form V is built by adding the prefix تـ (ta-) to a Form II verb. It changes the meaning from 'making someone else do something' to 'doing it to oneself' or 'undergoing a process'.

How It Works

Form V (الوزن الخامس) is one of the most frequent patterns in Modern Standard Arabic. It is derived from the root and pattern system by taking the Form II stem (which has a doubled middle radical) and adding the prefix تـ.

1. Morphological Structure:

  • Past Tense: تَفَعَّلَ (e.g., تَعَلَّمَ - he learned)
  • Present Tense: يَتَفَعَّلُ (e.g., يَتَعَلَّمُ - he learns)
  • Verbal Noun (Masdar): تَفَعُّل (e.g., تَعَلُّم - learning)

2. Key Meanings:

  • Reflexive/Resultative: It shows the result of a Form II action. For example, if you break (كسّر) something, it becomes broken (تكسّر).
  • Gradualness: It often implies an action happening step-by-step, such as tadhawwaqa (تذوّق - to taste/savor) or tafahhama (تفهّم - to come to understand gradually).
  • Affectation: It can mean 'pretending' or 'forcing oneself' to have a quality, like tashajja'a (تشجّع - to pluck up courage).

3. Transitivity:
While many Form V verbs are intransitive (they don't take an object), some very common ones are transitive, such as ta'allama (تعلّم - to learn something) and tadhakkara (تذكّر - to remember something).

Examples (4)

  1. تَعَلَّمَ الطَّالِبُ اللُّغَةَ العَرَبِيَّةَ.

The student learned the Arabic language.

Word by Word: Learned the student the language the Arabic.

Here, 'learned' (تعلّم) is the reflexive of 'taught' (علّم). The student performed the action of learning upon himself.

  2. تَكَسَّرَ الزُّجَاجُ بِسَبَبِ الحَادِثِ.

The glass smashed because of the accident.

Word by Word: Smashed the glass because of the accident.

This is the resultative use. Form II 'kassara' means to smash something; Form V 'takassara' describes the glass undergoing that smashing.

  3. تَذَكَّرْتُ اسْمَكَ الآنَ.

    I remembered your name now.

Word by Word: I remembered name your now.

This shows that Form V can be transitive, taking 'your name' as a direct object.

  4. يَتَغَيَّرُ الطَّقْسُ فِي هَذَا الفَصْلِ.

The weather changes in this season.

Word by Word: Changes the weather in this the season.

The verb 'yataghayyaru' (to change/transform) implies a process the subject is undergoing.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Form V with Form VI (تفاعَل).

    تَعَالَمَ الطَّالِبُ الدَّرْسَ.
    تَعَلَّمَ الطَّالِبُ الدَّرْسَ.

Form VI (تفاعَل) has a long 'a' sound and usually implies reciprocity between two people. Form V (تفعّل) has a doubled middle letter and is reflexive.

  • Forgetting the Shadda (doubled letter) in speech or writing.

    تَعَلَمَ الرَّجُلُ.
    تَعَلَّمَ الرَّجُلُ.

Without the Shadda on the middle radical, the word loses its specific Form V meaning and may become unrecognizable or a different form entirely.

Learn This First

To understand Form Five (تفعّل), you first need to be comfortable with the system of roots and patterns. Specifically, Form Five is a reflexive version of Form Two (فعّل), so you must understand how doubling the middle letter changes a verb's meaning and how the shadda mark functions orthographically.
