What Do You Call Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles in Taiwan Mandarin?

Quick answer

Many Taiwanese families call grandpa 阿公 (āgōng) and grandma 阿嬤 (āmà), words that Taiwanese Hokkien has too, and Hakka families call grandma 阿婆 (āpó). Your father's parents are also 爺爺 (yéye) and 奶奶 (nǎinai), and your mother's are 外公 (wàigōng) and 外婆 (wàipó). Uncles and aunts on your father's side are 伯伯 (bóbo), 叔叔 (shúshu) and 姑姑 (gūgu), and on your mother's side 舅舅 (jiùjiu) and 阿姨 (āyí).

Each relative in a Taiwanese family is greeted with a title that says how you are related.

What Do Taiwanese Families Say for Grandma and Grandpa?

WordWho it isGood to know
阿公āgōngGrandfatherA word that Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka both have. The Ministry of Education's Hokkien dictionary lists it for a father's father, a mother's father and an elderly man, and its Hakka dictionary lists it for a father's father.
阿嬤āmàGrandmotherThe Hokkien dictionary lists it under the spelling 阿媽, with the same three meanings for a woman.
阿婆āpóGrandmotherThe Ministry's Mandarin dictionary says Hakka people call a grandmother this. It also lists the word for an older woman in general.

Each family decides which grandparents get these words, so listen for the word the grandchildren use and say the same.

Wiktionary's table of regional words gives Taiwan two words for each grandparent: 爺爺 or 阿公, 奶奶 or 阿嬤, 外公 or 阿公, and 外婆 or 阿嬤.

曾祖父 and 曾祖母 are the dictionary words. In many families people say 阿祖 (āzǔ) to a great-grandparent, a Hokkien word that the Ministry's Hokkien dictionary lists.

大姑dà gū · 小姑xiǎo gūFather's eldest sister and youngest sister

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Call Someone Who Is Not a Relative 叔叔 (shúshu) or 阿姨 (āyí)?

Yes, when the person is about your parents' age. The dictionary's own example is a shopper calling a woman 阿姨 to ask where the children's books are. For someone a little older than you, children say 哥哥 or 姊姊, and adults often add a surname, as in 楊姐 (Yáng jiě), or use 大哥 or 大姊. A title for your parents' generation can make a person think you find them old.

What Do You Call a Friend's or Partner's Grandparents?

Greet them the way your friend does. In the TaiwanPlus episode Meeting the Family!, a student says 阿公 and 阿嬤 when he meets his teacher's grandparents.

What Is the Difference Between 阿嬤 (āmà) and 外婆 (wàipó)?

外婆 is the Mandarin word for a mother's mother. 阿嬤 is a Taiwanese Hokkien word for a grandmother, so it can mean a father's mother too. The Ministry of Education's dictionary also gives 阿嬤 as a second name for 外婆. The Taiwan vs Mainland Mandarin page covers more word differences.

Are These the Same Words in Mainland Mandarin and Cantonese?

Some are the same, and some are not. For Mainland Mandarin, see What Do You Call Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles in Mandarin Chinese?. For Cantonese, which uses different words for many relatives, see Cantonese Family Words and Phrases.

Is Bubblegum Free?

Yes. Lessons Poppy wrote for other learners are free for everyone to read. Custom lessons cost us money to make, so you need Bubblegum Pro for unlimited custom lessons.
