Tisus is the Swedish test for university study, and Swedex is a general Swedish test that stops at the end of 2026. Since June 6, 2026, people aged 16 to 66 who apply for Swedish citizenship need to show they know Swedish and Swedish society.
- Swedex A2B1
Folkuniversitetet, until the end of 2026
A general Swedish test you can show an employer, and some schools accept it. Each of its four parts gets its own level.
- CEFR A1–B1
- Swedex B2C1
Folkuniversitetet, until the end of 2026
The same four parts at a higher level. Socialstyrelsen accepts Swedex at C1 for a professional license.
- CEFR B1–C1
- Tisus
Stockholm University
Read non-fiction, write an essay and discuss topics in society at the level you need for courses taught in Swedish.
- About CEFR C1
- Pass or fail
- Accepted by every Swedish university
Tisus has three parts, and you have to pass all three. Reading and writing are usually on a Tuesday morning, and in Sweden speaking is on the Tuesday or the Wednesday.
- Tisus
- Reading75 min
- Writing150 min
- Speakingabout 30 min
Reading has five shorter texts with questions, then one long text where you search for 15 answers. In writing, you write about 400 words on a topic of public interest, and you may bring a dictionary that explains Swedish words in Swedish. For speaking in Sweden, you discuss a topic in a small group, then talk alone for two minutes about the same topic.
| What it's for | Test or proof |
|---|---|
| University or college courses taught in Swedish | Tisus |
| A job or a course that asks for a level of Swedish | Swedex, until the end of 2026 |
| Swedish citizenship, ages 16 to 66 | Proof of Swedish, such as school grades, SFI course D, municipal adult education or folk high school |
If you can't show proof for citizenship, Migrationsverket offers you a citizenship test instead. The part on Swedish society comes first, from August 2026, and the Swedish reading and listening test starts by October 1, 2027 at the latest.
Tisus runs twice a year, in May and in October, on the same days in Sweden and abroad.

Sign-up opens at 9:00 and closes at 16:00 Swedish time. These windows are for Sweden, where Tisus runs in Linköping, Lund, Malmö, Stockholm, Umeå and Uppsala. Abroad, you first send an interest form, for spring 2027 from January 11 to March 19, and the fee is 2,875 kr. A pass has no expiry date. If you fail one part, you retake only that part within a year.
Tisus checks whether your Swedish is ready for university courses, and its writing and speaking topics often come from Swedish society and the news. Get ready by reading lots of Swedish about topics like these, at a level where you understand most of it, which is called comprehensible input.
- Follow Swedish NewsRead a Swedish news story or two each week on a topic in society, and look up only the words that keep coming back.
- Argue Both SidesPick a news topic and explain two points of view out loud for two minutes, then say which one you agree with.
- Use the Official SamplesStockholm University has sample tasks for every part of Tisus, including a video of the speaking test. The real test is a bit harder.
Bubblegum
For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Swedish. You learn from Swedish you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
Poppy, your AI tutor, writes Swedish lessons around what you want to learn, at the level that fits you. Tisus and Swedex don't use Bubblegum's level numbers, 1 to 6.
- Get Swedish news and stories written at your level, about society or whatever you're into.
- If a sentence is unclear, ask Poppy about it right where you're reading.
- The words you save show up in new sentences in your next lessons. That's Regenerative Review™, and you can export the words to Anki too.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- Tisus speaking starts with a 20-minute group talk, which you can't do in Bubblegum. You get the topics about a week ahead, so talk them through with a friend or two.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

A Swedish Lesson at the Café
Coffee and pastry at a cafe
Anna meets Erik at a café.
I have been in Sweden for a long time now.
Yesterday I had coffee at another café.
What did you eat there?
I ate a tasty bun.
What should I take now that Swedex is ending?
If you need Swedish for university, take Tisus. For a job or a course, ask the employer or school which proof of Swedish it will accept after 2026.
When do I get my Tisus result?
Stockholm University emails your result about five weeks after the test. That is before the last day to send papers for a university application on antagning.se, so a pass can count for the next semester.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
