On paper, the Portuguese of Portugal looks a lot like Brazil's, but people in Lisbon swallow many unstressed vowels, so a word you can read may pass by unnoticed when someone says it. A rule about vowel reduction explains that once. Your ear only adjusts after hours of listening to Portugal's Portuguese you already follow. That kind of listening and reading is comprehensible input: European Portuguese you mostly understand, where the familiar words carry you past each new one.
What Comprehensible Input Looks Like
The picture lays out one Portuguese sentence per row, with a bar for each word. Gray marks words you know, and purple marks the single new one.
About one unfamiliar word per sentence, while you still follow the meaning.
Since the rest of the sentence is familiar, it tells you what the purple word means. In the beginning, that's a two-line order at a cafe counter. Further on, a podcast episode about life in Portugal gives you enough clues to guess a word on your own. When you lose track of most sentences, drop back to shorter material.
Your Roadmap by Level
Each of Bubblegum's six levels is a sentence a learner might say about their reading. Find yours, and treat the podcasts and stories as a loose match, because they don't use these levels.
- Level 1
I'm just starting out or know only a few words
Read the cafe lesson further down this page at Level 1, with the Portugal audio on. Order the same coffee in your head as you go.

I follow conversations on familiar topics
Read a Portuguese With Leo lesson on LingQ while you listen, then hear it again without the text.
Portuguese With Leo on LingQ - Level 4
I understand most content but miss some nuance
Listen to a longer episode from a European Portuguese podcast for learners. Note one phrase you'd like to use and try it with a tutor.
Portuguese With Leo - Level 5
I read complex topics but rare words slow me down
Watch an RTP program on a topic you already know, and guess new words from the scene before you check them.
RTP Play - Level 6
I read at near-native level
Read Portuguese novels and opinion columns, and listen to radio debates. Notice when speakers choose tu, você, or a title like o senhor.
When a row needs little help, step to the next one. Step back if you're reaching for the dictionary in most sentences.
Try It on a Real Lesson
Here's a lesson by Poppy, your AI tutor in Bubblegum, a language app that writes European Portuguese lessons for your level and interests. It's set at a cafe in Portugal. Inside Bubblegum it also has Portugal-accented audio, a dictionary, and grammar notes.
A Cafe in Portugal at Every Level
From Bubblegum’s guide Everyday Greetings and Café Interactions in Portuguese. It works here the way it works inside Bubblegum.
I know a few words, or I can sound out words but not much else.
Daily Greetings
Good morning!
Good morning! How are you?
I am well, thank you (male speaker).
See you later!
Bye!
Read it at Level 1 first, then try Level 3. The cafe words from the first version come back, so the new ones are easier to spot.
Frequently Asked Questions About Comprehensible Input
Does Brazilian Portuguese Count as Input for Portugal?
Partly. Brazilian reading builds grammar and many shared words, but the sound and some everyday words differ, like trem for what Portugal calls a comboio. Keep most of your listening from Portugal.
How Much Time Should I Set Aside?
Plan three to five hours a week for Portugal's Portuguese, in sittings of at least 15–30 minutes. Reading and listening can fill most of it, with a little left for talking with a tutor or a friend from Portugal.
Which App Should a Beginner Choose?
If you are serious about learning European Portuguese, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Our European Portuguese comparison also lists courses, podcasts, and tutors from Portugal.
Is Bubblegum Free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
