Kunming Dialect: 12 Common Phrases and What They Mean

Quick answer

The Kunming dialect, or 昆明话, is the Southwestern Mandarin spoken in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. Its best-known feature is how it asks yes-or-no questions: 格 goes before the verb and 吗 disappears, so 你格吃饭了? means "Have you eaten?" Learn that, plus 哪样 for "what" and 哪点 for "where", and you can follow many everyday questions.

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan, in China's far southwest, and its dialect is a kind of Southwestern Mandarin. It goes back to settlers who came from the area around Nanjing in the Ming dynasty. Apart from the 格 question, its grammar mostly matches Standard Mandarin.
