Babbel's own list, which we read on October 24, 2026, teaches 13 languages to English speakers, and none of them is Vietnamese.
Duolingo teaches Vietnamese, and so do the apps below. Our Vietnamese comparison also covers VietnamesePod101.
Bubblegum
For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Vietnamese. You learn from Vietnamese you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
If your partner's family lives in Saigon, pick Southern Vietnamese in Bubblegum. Then Poppy, your AI tutor, can write the dinner talk you'd have with them.
For speaking practice with a real person, our Vietnamese comparison lists tutors.
- Lessons come in Northern, Central, or Southern Vietnamese, whichever you pick.
- New to the letters? The Quốc Ngữ course teaches the alphabet and the six tones.
- Call Poppy in live voice chat and practice the dinner talk out loud.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- A menu or song lyrics you find can't become a lesson. Paste the words or send a photo, and Poppy explains them sentence by sentence.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

- Teaches Quốc Ngữ

Which Vietnamese app should a beginner choose?
If you are serious about learning Vietnamese, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or start with Duolingo if you want a game course, or LingoDeer if you'd like grammar explained as you go.
Should I learn Northern or Southern Vietnamese?
Choose by where the people you'll talk to are from. People in Hanoi speak Northern Vietnamese, and people in Ho Chi Minh City speak Southern Vietnamese. For Central Vietnamese, see our guide to the best ways to learn Central Vietnamese.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
