On October 15, 2026, Duolingo listed one Vietnamese course, taught from English, and nothing for Southern Vietnamese. Duolingo's course page doesn't say which accent it uses. Reviews by Migaku and Nutty Vietnamese say it's the Northern accent of Hanoi.
In Saigon and the Mekong Delta, the hỏi and ngã tones sound the same, so you hear five tones where Hanoi has six. Everyday words change too: a polite "yes" is dạ, "he" can be ổng, and "she" can be bả. Our Vietnamese app comparison has more apps and a section on the three accents.

Will the spelling I learn work in the South?
Yes. Every region of Vietnam spells words the same way. In the South, words with hỏi and ngã are still spelled differently, even though they sound the same.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
