Is Maltese on Duolingo? What to Use Instead in 2026

Quick answer

No. As of October 14, 2026, Duolingo's own course list didn't teach Maltese. For word and sentence games, try Kuċċarina; for audio lessons, try Bluebird; for phrases before a trip, try uTalk; for short free stories, try Duostories; and for lessons written at your level, try Bubblegum.

Maltese doesn't appear on Duolingo's course list. On October 14, 2026, we checked Duolingo's own course list and found nothing that teaches Maltese.

A handful of apps teach Maltese, and one is made only for it. This page groups them as word games, audio lessons, phrases, and short stories. For classes, language exchange, and Maltese TV and radio, see our best apps to learn Maltese.

Custom Lessons Made for You

Bubblegum

For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Maltese. You learn from Maltese you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.

Maltese lessons in Bubblegum are drafted for you by Poppy, your AI tutor. For the village festa in August, she can write a chat with your cousins about the fireworks, and you can listen as you read.

Poppy builds a flexible journey around your interests and level, so you can focus on what's most useful to you. Bubblegum doesn't give you someone to talk with. For that, see the class and exchange app in our full Maltese comparison.

          Common Questions

Which Maltese app should a beginner choose?

If you are serious about learning Maltese, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or start with Kuċċarina if you want quick games, or Bluebird if you'd like to listen first. Maltese uses the Latin alphabet with a few extra letters, like ċ, ġ, ħ, and ż.

Are there Duolingo Stories in Maltese?

Not from Duolingo. Duostories has 16 Maltese stories, which volunteers translated from Duolingo's stories, and its FAQ says the project is not linked to Duolingo. Duolingo's own course list has no Maltese.

          Is Bubblegum free?

Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
