Is Icelandic on Duolingo? What to Use Instead in 2026

Quick answer

No. Icelandic was missing from Duolingo's course list when we read it on October 14, 2026. For a course in order, try Memrise, Mango, or Ling; for speaking, try Bara tala or Pimsleur; for word games, try Drops or uTalk; and for lessons written at your level, try Bubblegum.

You can't learn Icelandic on Duolingo. Duolingo's own course list, as we checked it on October 14, 2026, had nothing for Icelandic.

Icelandic does have phone apps with short lessons, and one was built in Iceland for people who live and work there. This page groups them by what you want to do: follow a course, speak, or play word games. Tutors, exchange apps, and reading tools are in our best apps to learn Icelandic.

Custom Lessons Made for You

Bubblegum

For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Icelandic. You learn from Icelandic you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.

In Bubblegum, Poppy, your AI tutor, writes your Icelandic lessons. If you're going to see the northern lights, she can write a talk with a tour guide in Reykjavík, and you can ask her why a word changed its ending.

Speaking practice with a person happens outside Bubblegum. For that, look at Bara tala below or the tutors in our full Icelandic comparison.

          Common Questions

Which Icelandic app should a beginner choose?

If you are serious about learning Icelandic, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or start with Memrise if you want short videos of people talking, or Pimsleur if you'd like to speak from your first lesson. Icelandic has letters English doesn't use, like þ and ð, so learn how they sound early.

Is there a free Icelandic course from Iceland?

Yes. Icelandic Online is a set of free courses. It starts with a survival course for people living in Iceland and then has five levels, from A1 up to C1.

          Is Bubblegum free?

Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
