Indian Urdu is the one to learn if your family is from India, or you're moving to a city like Delhi or Lucknow. Most Urdu apps teach one general Urdu and don't say which country it comes from. About 51 million people in India named Urdu as the language they grew up with in the 2011 census. Our Urdu app comparison covers apps for any kind of Urdu.

Which app should a beginner learning Indian Urdu choose?
If you are serious about learning Urdu (India), start with Bubblegum. Poppy, your AI tutor, writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or start with Karak if you already read Hindi, because its letters section matches each Urdu letter to a Devanagari one.
I speak Hindi. What do I need to learn for Urdu?
The script comes first. Hindi and Urdu share their grammar and basic vocabulary, so a lot of spoken Urdu will already make sense to you. Learn the Urdu letters, starting with chapter 1 of Bubblegum's Urdu Alphabet course. Then, on Rekhta, switch a couplet you know from Hindi letters to Urdu letters.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. Lessons Poppy wrote for other learners are free for everyone to read. Custom lessons cost us money to make, so you need Bubblegum Pro for unlimited custom lessons.
