The best way to learn Georgian starts with its 33 letters. After that, give most of each week to Georgian you can follow while the audio plays, and use the rest to say new words to a person. Our guide to comprehensible input lists what to read and hear at each stage. The term just means Georgian you can mostly follow.
In Bubblegum, Poppy, your AI tutor, writes a lesson on a topic you pick, at your level, and plays it aloud so you hear every line. That covers the reading and listening. A tutor or a Georgian-speaking friend covers the talking.
Most of your week should go to reading while the audio plays, because that is where you meet the most Georgian you can follow. The other methods below fill in what reading leaves out. A 2016 review of 49 studies (Jeon and Day) found that easy reading in bulk improved reading in English as a second or foreign language. Those studies were about English, so nobody has shown the same result for Georgian yet. Pick texts where about one word in each sentence is new.
| Method | What It Builds | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| Reading with the audio on | New words, grammar in context, and how each word sounds | Most of your week |
| A letters course | Quick reading of the 33 letters, which have one sound each | The first weeks |
| An audio course | Saying Georgian out loud from the first lesson | The first months |
| Videos and slow podcasts | The pace of Georgian speech and its popping consonants, like კ | Every week, once the letters feel easy |
| A tutor or a Georgian-speaking friend | Answering on the spot | After you read something new |
| Verb tables | How one verb changes for who acts, who gets the action and when | When a form in your reading looks new |
| Saved words in sentences | Remembering a word with the sentence it came from | A few minutes at the end of a session |
Your goal shapes what you read and who you talk to.
- Talk With Family or FriendsListen to how relatives talk at the table, and write down the phrases you hear most. Ask them to say each one again, slowly.
- Travel in GeorgiaRead about taking a taxi in Tbilisi or ordering at a café in Batumi. Say your questions to a tutor before the trip, so they come out smoothly on the street.
- Live in GeorgiaLearn the letters before you arrive, so signs and forms are already readable. If you plan to apply for citizenship, the Public Service Development Agency says the test covers the Georgian language, the history of Georgia and the basics of law.
- Enjoy the Food and WineLearn the names on the menu, like ხაჭაპური (cheese bread), ხინკალი (a kind of dumpling) and ღვინო (wine), and say them to the people who serve you.
- Work With Georgian ColleaguesRead short messages and news about your field. Ask a colleague to say the same sentence in two ways, one for friends and one for a meeting.
- Follow the NewsStart with a story whose news you already know from English. The headline and the first lines are enough at first.
EasyGeorgian sells a course for the citizenship test. The fastest-way guide shows how many hours the whole language takes: the fastest way to learn Georgian.

- Leaving the Letters for LaterListening alone leaves signs and menus unreadable. The 33 letters have one sound each, so a few new letters a session is plenty.
- Memorizing Verb Tables Before You ReadGeorgian verbs change a lot. Meet each form inside a sentence first, and open a table when a form in your reading puzzles you.
- Starting With a Word ListA list gives each word a meaning but no sense of how people use it. Keep new words inside whole sentences that you have heard.

Should I Use an App or a Teacher?
Use both, for different things. An app gives you Georgian to read and hear at any hour. A teacher hears you speak and tells you what sounded wrong, which matters in Georgian because sounds like the popping კ are easy to miss on your own. One lesson a week is enough to start.
Should I Study Grammar Before Reading?
No. Read first, and open a grammar page when a form in your reading puzzles you. When someone does something to something in the simple past, the doer gets the ending -მა, as in ბავშვმა წიგნი წაიკითხა (the child read the book), where ბავშვი (child) becomes ბავშვმა. A few stories later you will see that ending without trying.
Which Georgian App Should a Beginner Choose?
