The best way to learn Awadhi starts with the Devanagari letters. After that, give most of each week to Awadhi you can follow while the audio plays, and use the rest to say new words to a person. Our guide to comprehensible input lists what to read and hear at each stage. The term just means Awadhi you can mostly follow.
In Bubblegum, Poppy, your AI tutor, writes a lesson on a topic you pick, at your level, and plays it aloud so you hear every line. That covers the reading and listening. A relative, a friend or a tutor who speaks Awadhi covers the talking.
Most of your week should go to reading while the audio plays, because that is where you meet the most Awadhi you can follow. The other methods below fill in what reading leaves out. A 2016 review of 49 studies (Jeon and Day) found that easy reading in bulk improved reading in English as a second or foreign language. Those studies were about English, so nobody has shown the same result for Awadhi yet. Read a few sentences of a text. If most have about one new word, keep reading. If you can't tell what's happening, pick something easier.
| Method | What It Builds | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| Reading with the audio on | New words, grammar in context, and how each word sounds | Most of your week |
| A letters course | Reading the Devanagari letters, with Roman letters to lean on at first | The first weeks |
| A listen-and-repeat course | Saying Awadhi out loud from the first lesson | The first months |
| Talking with someone who speaks Awadhi | Answering on the spot, and hearing how words are really said | After you read something new |
| Noticing where Awadhi differs from Hindi | Seeing which words changed, like Hindi करना and Awadhi करब (to do) | If you already know Hindi |
| Saved words in sentences | Remembering a word with the sentence it came from | A few minutes at the end of a session |
- Talk With Family or FriendsWrite down the phrases you hear most at the table, and ask a relative to say each one again, slowly. Practice them in your next call.
- Talk With a Partner's FamilyLearn how to greet each person and ask about their week. Say the lines to your partner first, and ask them to tell you how it sounded.
- Travel to Lucknow or AyodhyaRead about ordering food and asking the way. Say your questions to a tutor or a friend before the trip, so they come out smoothly.
- Read the RamcharitmanasLearn the letters first, then choose a few lines of Tulsidas's poem on Hindi Wikisource. Look up only the words that stop you, and read the lines aloud.
- Learn the Songs and ProverbsThe Awadh Project has a page of Awadhi folk songs and one of proverbs. Pick one line, say it aloud, and ask someone what it means.
- Live Around Awadhi SpeakersLearn the words people use at the market and with neighbors. Ask Poppy for a lesson on one errand at a time.

| Part | Other Option | App or Service |
|---|---|---|
| The Devanagari letters | We found no free Awadhi letters course | Bubblegum's Awadhi Letters course |
| A first course | A structured video course, Bluebird, where you listen and repeat | Bubblegum, for lessons about your interests and goals |
| Everyday sentences | Pages on common sentences and everyday conversations at The Awadh Project | Bubblegum, where Poppy writes a lesson on a topic you pick and plays it aloud |
| Listening practice | Bluebird's listen-and-repeat lessons | Bubblegum's lesson audio, which is AI, so listen to people too |
| Looking up words | Google Translate, which added Awadhi in 2024 | Tapping a word in a Bubblegum lesson, or asking Poppy to explain a line |
| Words to keep | A notebook of sentences you like | Saved words come back in new Bubblegum lessons through Regenerative Review™ |
| Talking with a person | A relative or friend who speaks Awadhi | HelloTalk, which lists Awadhi language partners, or Talkpal, an AI chat with speaking practice |
When short sentences feel comfortable, read a few lines of the Ramcharitmanas.
- Leaving the Letters for LaterListening alone leaves signs and messages unreadable. You can read in Roman letters while you learn Devanagari, so a few new letters a session is plenty.
- Assuming a Hindi Word Is AwadhiMany words look familiar but end differently, like Hindi <W lang="hi">करना</W> and Awadhi <W lang="awa">करब</W> (to do). Check each new word against a lesson or a person.
- Starting With a Word ListA list gives each word a meaning but no sense of how people use it. Keep new words inside whole sentences that you have heard.

Should I Use an App or a Teacher?
Use both, for different things. An app gives you Awadhi to read and hear at any hour. A person who speaks Awadhi hears you and tells you what sounded wrong. We didn't find a list of Awadhi tutors, so a relative or friend may be your best partner. Start with whatever conversation you can arrange, even a short one.
Should I Study Grammar Before Reading?
No. Read first, and open a grammar page when a form in your reading puzzles you. The word for "your" is तोहार, and "our" is हमार. You will meet those forms again in later lessons.
Which Awadhi App Should a Beginner Choose?
If you are serious about learning Awadhi, start with Bubblegum. Poppy, your AI tutor, writes lessons at your level about things you like. If you'd rather begin with a video course made for Awadhi, try Bluebird next. More choices are in our comparison of Awadhi apps.
Is Bubblegum Free?
Yes. Lessons Poppy wrote for other learners are free for everyone to read. Custom lessons cost us money to make, so you need Bubblegum Pro for unlimited custom lessons.
