Nynorsk is the written standard to learn if you live or study where people write it, such as Voss or Volda, or if you write Bokmål and need Nynorsk for school. Norway has two official written standards with equal standing, and in 2025 about 11 percent of pupils in primary and lower secondary school wrote Nynorsk as their main written form. Duolingo and uTalk teach Bokmål, so this page lists the few apps that teach Nynorsk, two Nynorsk tools, and the free resources from Norway that fill the gaps.
Here are the apps and services that teach Nynorsk, grouped by what they help you do.
Bubblegum
For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Norwegian (Nynorsk). You learn from Norwegian (Nynorsk) you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
Bubblegum builds Nynorsk lessons around your own life. Tell Poppy, your AI tutor, what you want to learn. She writes lessons for your level and helps you understand the words and grammar. You can read and listen, and ask her about anything that is unclear. News and stories give you more Nynorsk to read about the topics you pick.
When you pick Norwegian, Bubblegum asks which written standard you want: Bokmål or Nynorsk. Word meanings are in English, Bokmål, Polish, and Ukrainian.
- Lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Read and listen to news and stories in Nynorsk about things you care about.
- Tap a word to see what it means, how its endings change, and a picture for many nouns.
- Grammar topics with examples explain how Nynorsk works, such as why ei bok becomes boka.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, and you can export them to Anki as flashcards.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- You can't turn your own Nynorsk books or articles into lessons. However, you can paste a page into the chat, and Poppy will explain it.
- Lessons use one spelling for each word, such as vi for “we”. Books and papers may use another spelling that is also correct, like me, so they can look different.
- Custom lessons cost us money to make, so you need Bubblegum Pro for unlimited custom lessons. Lessons Poppy wrote for other learners are free for everyone to read.

A lot of free Nynorsk teaching comes from Norway's schools and language centres. Nynorsksenteret, the national centre for Nynorsk in education, has a page for adults who learn Nynorsk as a second language, with book tips, lesson plans, and model texts. It also has grammar pages on nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and verbs, and a free booklet, Nynorsk på 1-2-3, that uses comic strips to show the most common mistakes. Nynorsk.Bnorsk.no is a site for people who learn Nynorsk, with vocabulary by topic, grammar, speaking exercises, and practice for the Norskprøven test. For words, Nynorskordboka on ordbokene.no shows the forms of each word, and Lexin is a Nynorsk-English dictionary.
For reading and listening, Barnebøker for Norge has picture stories at five levels in Nynorsk, and each story has audio, plus a PDF that shows the Nynorsk and Bokmål versions together. NRK, Norway's public broadcaster, must make at least a quarter of its content in Nynorsk. Framtida and Dag og Tid publish news, culture, and opinion in Nynorsk, and Nynorsk Wikipedia has more than 180,000 articles.
