Galician, or galego, is the language of Galicia in northwest Spain, where Galician and Spanish are both official. In a 2023 survey by the Galician Institute of Statistics, 46 out of every 100 people in Galicia said they speak Galician always or more than Spanish. Many big language apps do not teach it, and some of the most complete free lessons come from Galicia's own institutions.
Here are the apps and services that teach Galician, grouped by what they help you do. You can start with one and add another when you need it.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
Bubblegum suits learners who want Galician built around their own lives. Tell Poppy, your AI tutor, what you want to learn. She writes lessons for your level and helps you understand the words and grammar. You can read and listen, and ask her about anything that is unclear. News and stories give you more Galician to read about music, food, family, and other things you care about.
The trade-off is that Bubblegum does not replace real Galician voices. For recorded speakers, uTalk is the better fit. For conversation, try the apps in Learn With People, and for a fixed course, see the free courses from Galicia below.
- Read Galician lessons for free.
- Lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Read and listen to news and stories in Galician about things you care about.
- Ask Poppy about a sentence while you read.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
- Lesson audio uses AI voices, not recordings of Galician speakers.
- You cannot import your own books or articles.
- The free plan includes one new custom lesson each day.

Learn From Galicia's Own Resources
Galicia's government runs the Portal da Lingua Galega, which has online courses for learners. A course for people starting from zero has five units that mix sounds, grammar, words, and culture. The Celga 1 self-learning course is open at any time. The Celga is the official Galician language certificate, and the portal has exam models and study materials for it.
The Real Academia Galega is the official academy for the language. Its online dictionary lets you hear how a word sounds and see how a verb changes, and the Dicionario RAG app puts it on your phone. The academy's Portal das Palabras lets you look up a Spanish word and find its Galician match.
CRTVG is Galicia's public broadcaster. Its TVG á carta service has series, films, and documentaries in Galician, and you can hear Radio Galega too. Both are free, with apps for iPhone and Android. Advanced learners can also search CORGA, a reference collection of current Galician texts, at the Centro Ramón Piñeiro.
