About 24 million people speak Dutch as their first language, and it is an official language in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname. In Belgium it is often called Flemish, and uTalk sells it as a separate course. Dutch has many courses, but several end around level A2 or B1, so you may want more Dutch to read and listen to once the lessons feel easy.
Here are the apps and services that teach Dutch, grouped by what they help you do. You can start with one and add another when you need it.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
Bubblegum suits learners who want Dutch built around their own lives. Tell Poppy, your AI tutor, what you want to learn. She writes lessons for your level and helps you understand the words and grammar. You can read and listen, and ask her about anything that is unclear. News and stories give you more Dutch to read about music, food, family, and other things you care about. Bubblegum teaches Dutch as it is spoken in the Netherlands.
The trade-off is that Bubblegum does not replace real Dutch voices. For recorded speakers, Pimsleur and Mango are the better fit, and for conversation, try the apps in Learn With People.
- Lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Read and listen to news and stories in Dutch about things you care about.
- Ask Poppy about a sentence while you read.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
- Lesson audio uses AI voices, not recordings of Dutch speakers.
- You cannot import your own books or articles.
- The free plan includes one new custom lesson each day.

More Ways to Learn Dutch
Dutch has plenty of free material beyond apps. Learn Dutch with Bart de Pau has video lessons, word lists, and exercises. Easy Dutch interviews people on the streets of the Netherlands, with subtitles in Dutch and English. For news at an easier level, the NOS Journaal in Makkelijke Taal is a weekday news show in simple Dutch, and Wablieft is a Belgian center for clear language that writes news in simple Dutch.
Taalcompleet is a course book that takes you from level 0 to A1, with online exercises, video lessons, and explanations you can download in English and other languages. If you plan to live or work in the Netherlands, the Staatsexamen NT2 is the national exam for adults who learn Dutch as a second language, and the inburgering site has a practice page for the integration exams. To check how a word is spelled, Woordenlijst.org holds the official Dutch word list from the Dutch Language Union.
