Best Apps for Welsh Comprehensible Input in 2026

Stories, audio, and videos can all help you learn Welsh when you can follow what they mean. That is the idea behind comprehensible input: learning from Welsh you can mostly understand. Welsh has lots of TV and radio for people who already speak it, but learners on Reddit say there are few videos made for people who are just starting out.

These apps and sites give you Welsh at your level, or help you follow the Welsh you pick yourself. For courses, speaking practice, and tutors, see our Welsh app comparison.

Custom Lessons Made for You

Bubblegum

Learn Welsh with a path made just for you. Start with your level, what you like, and why you want to learn. Your path grows as you learn, with new lessons that fit you. Bubblegum also has news and stories, so you can read and listen to a mix of Welsh about rugby, music, food, or everyday life.

Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each lesson for your level and goals. If a sentence is hard to follow, just ask her to explain the words or the grammar.

The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help you read or watch Welsh you found yourself. For a TV show or a web page you already picked, S4C Clic and Readlang are the better fit.

      • Each Pigion episode lists the harder words with their English meanings.
      • In Sgwrsio and Pont, people who learned Welsh talk about their lives.

          Books, Magazines, Videos, and Podcasts

The Amdani series has more than 50 books for adults learning Welsh, from detective stories to life stories. The National Centre for Learning Welsh and the Books Council of Wales make them together, and the Books Council's shop, Ffolio, sells many as e-books and audiobooks. If you live in the UK and join a library in Wales, you can also borrow Welsh e-books and audiobooks for free in the BorrowBox app. For a book with audio from a publisher outside Wales, Short Stories in Welsh for Beginners by Olly Richards has eight stories for high beginners and low intermediate learners.

Lingo360 posts the big news stories of each week with word lists for new speakers. Its Vocab button shows translations when you hover over highlighted words, and the same button works on Golwg360, a news site for people who already speak Welsh. Lingo Newydd, the magazine for learners from the same publisher, comes out every two months, with each article marked by color for its level.

On YouTube, S4C Dysgu Cymraeg posts short clips from S4C shows for learners, and S4C labels them by level, from Entry to Intermediate. Learners on Reddit often recommend Galés con Marian, where Marian posts vlogs in Welsh marked by level, with a word list in the description. The Learn Welsh channel has videos that go with the units of its courses.

Y Pod lists Welsh podcasts and has a section for learners. There you can also find The News for Learners, which uses some of the week's top news stories for listening practice. Hefyd is a podcast about people who are learning Welsh or have learned it.
