Stories, audio, and videos can all help you learn Slovenian when you can follow what they mean. That is the idea behind comprehensible input: learning from Slovenian you can mostly understand. About 2.4 million people speak Slovenian as their mother tongue, and learners on Reddit often say that material for learning it is hard to find.
These apps and free resources give you Slovenian at your level, or help you follow the Slovenian you pick yourself. For courses, speaking practice, and tutors, see our Slovenian app comparison.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
Learn Slovenian with a path made just for you. Start with your level, what you like, and why you want to learn. Your path grows as you learn, with new lessons that fit you. Bubblegum also has news and stories, so you can read and listen to a mix of Slovenian about music, food, family, or everyday life.
Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each lesson for your level and goals. If a sentence is hard to follow, just ask her to explain a word or why its ending changed.
The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help you read Slovenian you found yourself. For a video or a web page you already picked, the tools in Read and Watch Slovenian You Choose are the better fit.
- Read and listen to lessons, news, and stories about things you like.
- New lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
- Ask Poppy for help as you read.
- Lesson audio uses AI voices, not recordings of Slovenian speakers.
- You cannot bring in your own books, articles, or videos.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

Children's shows are an easy place to start. RTV Slovenija's free Živ žav app and site have cartoons, series, fairy tales, and radio plays in Slovenian for children aged 3 to 8. Learners on Reddit also suggest searching YouTube for cartoons dubbed into Slovenian, such as Pujsa Pepa, the Slovenian Peppa Pig.
For reading, Časoris is an online newspaper for children that has won international awards. It posts short stories about the news and science most weekdays, and some of them also come out in English, so you can check what you understood.
For videos made for learners, Slovenščina skozi dialog posts short dialogues in Slovenian about everyday things, such as a trip to the post office or a family pet. New videos come out most weeks, and each one helps you practice listening and reading at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there graded readers in Slovenian?
A few. The University of Ljubljana's Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language publishes five graded readers for learners, from level A2 to B1+. They retell folk tales, legends, and stories from history, such as Martin Krpan, and two of them have a free recording on the Centre's site so far.
Does Slovenian spelling show how to say each word?
Not completely. Slovenian uses 25 letters, including č, š, and ž, but everyday writing doesn't mark which syllable is stressed or exactly how some vowels sound. Dictionaries and textbooks add those marks, so listening while you read helps you learn what the spelling leaves out.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
