Stories, audio, and videos can all help you learn Romanian when you can follow what they mean. That is the idea behind comprehensible input: learning from Romanian you can mostly understand. Learners on Reddit say Romanian made for learners is harder to find than Spanish or French, especially after the beginner stage. On the other hand, almost every children's show in Romania is dubbed into Romanian, and other foreign shows and films usually keep their own language, with Romanian subtitles.
These apps and sites help you find Romanian at your level, or make the Romanian you choose easier to follow. For courses, speaking practice, and tutors, see our Romanian app comparison.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
Learn Romanian with a path made just for you. Start with your level, what you like, and why you want to learn. Your path grows as you learn, with new lessons that fit you. Bubblegum also has news and stories, so you can read and listen to a mix of Romanian about music, food, family, or daily life.
Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each lesson for you. If a sentence is hard to follow, just ask her what a word means or why its ending changed.
The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help you read Romanian you found yourself. For a show, a video, or a web page you already picked, the apps in Read and Watch Romanian You Choose are the better fit.
- Read and listen to lessons, news, and stories about things you like.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
- Ask Poppy for help as you read.
- AI voices read each lesson, not recordings of Romanian speakers.
- You cannot bring in your own books, shows, or articles.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

More Romanian to Hear, Watch, and Read
Podcasts made for learners are a good place to start. In the Romanian Weekly Podcast, a narrator reads a story or a retold book each week, marked by level from A1 to B2, and the text is on its website. Learners on r/romanian like it for short, easy stories read slowly, and one reads its A1 Gulliver's Travels while keeping a list of new words. In Acum înțeleg!, a Romanian teacher talks about life and culture in Romania for learners at about B1, with more than 400 episodes and videos you can watch with subtitles. Talk Tonic Radio has podcast episodes marked A1–A2 or B1–B2, and Fluent Fiction has Romanian stories with bilingual audio and a word list for each one.
On YouTube, Learn Romanian with Vlad posts talks he calls Comprehensible Romanian, marked from B1 to C1, about books, ideas, and everyday topics. Learn Romanian with Nico, often recommended in learner threads, has more than 300 short lessons from a Romanian teacher, including Romanian poems with their words explained. When you can follow more, Romanians on r/romanian often suggest Zaiafet, an educational channel about history and books. Cinepub posts full Romanian films for free.
Cartoons are an easy start. Learners on r/romanian watch Peppa Pig in Romanian, called Purcelușa Peppa, and say Disney+ has many shows dubbed into Romanian, though not in every country. For TV and news, TVR+, from Romania's public broadcaster, streams its channels live along with shows and news to watch later. DW, Germany's international broadcaster, also writes the news in Romanian. Songs help too: one learner on r/languagelearning began by translating the lyrics of Romanian songs, later added TV shows, and reached Advanced Low on the ACTFL speaking test after two years.
For reading, the Romanian Easy Readers series retells Romanian classics, such as Amintiri din copilărie, in simpler Romanian, with word notes and questions after each chapter. Learners on r/romanian also read First Romanian Reader for Beginners, which puts Romanian and English side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I read along while I listen?
Yes. Romanian is spelled mostly the way it sounds, so once you know its 31 letters, you can follow a text while you hear it. Five of them, ă, â, î, ș, and ț, are Latin letters with marks added for Romanian sounds.
Can I learn from news and shows from Moldova?
Yes. Romanian is the official language of Moldova too, and in 2023 Moldova's parliament voted to call it Romanian in all of its laws. News from Moldova, such as Europa Liberă Moldova, is good practice as well.
How much of a text should I understand?
Pick something where you already know almost every word. In one study, readers needed to know about 98 out of 100 words in a story to follow it well. If you stop on almost every line, try something easier.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
