Best Apps for Portuguese Comprehensible Input in 2026

Stories, audio, and videos can all help you learn Portuguese when you can follow what they mean. That is the idea behind comprehensible input: learning from Portuguese you can mostly understand.

More than 265 million people speak Portuguese, so there is plenty of it to hear and read. Brazilian and European Portuguese sound different, though, and many learner resources use only one of them. Where an app's own pages say which variety it uses, its card says so too. For courses, speaking practice, and tutors, see our Portuguese app comparison.

Custom Lessons Made for You

Bubblegum

Learn Portuguese with a path made just for you. Start with your level, what you like, and why you want to learn. Your path grows as you learn, with new lessons that fit you. Bubblegum also has news and stories, so you can read and listen to a mix of Portuguese about music, food, travel, or everyday life.

Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each lesson for you. She can tie lessons to your goals or the news. If a sentence is hard to follow, just ask her to explain it.

The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help you read Portuguese you found yourself. For a show, a book, or an article you already picked, the apps in Read and Watch Portuguese You Choose are the better fit.

  • Separate Brazilian and European Portuguese journeys, with lessons written and voiced for the variety you choose.
  • Read and listen to lessons, news, and stories about things you like.
  • Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
  • Ask Poppy for help as you read.
  • You cannot bring in your own books, shows, or articles.
  • AI voices read each lesson, not recordings of Portuguese speakers.
  • A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Should I listen to Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Choose the one you plan to use. Speakers from Brazil and Portugal can generally understand each other, so input in either one helps. Spend most of your listening time on the variety you want to speak, though. Our guide to European Portuguese lists more resources from Portugal.

How long does it take to learn Portuguese?

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute puts Portuguese in its group of languages close to English. It expects its students to need about 24 weeks of full-time classes, with 23 hours of class each week, to reach a professional level in speaking and listening.

    Is Bubblegum free?

Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
