Best Apps for British English Comprehensible Input in 2026

British TV and radio are easy to find in the UK, but BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds work only for people who live there. Learners elsewhere need other ways to hear British English they can mostly follow, which is called comprehensible input. These apps and free series give you British voices and stories set in the UK, from a first podcast to full-speed radio.

Choose material where you know nearly every word in a sentence. A beginner might hear someone ask for a cuppa in a short scene at home. Later, a longer story gives you enough clues to work out that a fortnight is two weeks. For courses and tutors, see our British English guide.

Custom Lessons Made for You

Bubblegum

For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn British English. You learn from British English you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.

Pick a topic, like a football match or a trip to the seaside, and Poppy, your AI tutor, writes a lesson about it in British English. When a word like knackered stops you, Poppy explains what it means and when people say it.

The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help with a book or show you picked yourself. For those, use the apps in Read and Watch British English You Choose.

  • Each story comes at three levels, so you can start with the easiest one.
  • You can use it only in English.

Learners on Reddit (r/EnglishLearning) suggest the Kindle app for real books. A novel written for adults can be hard, so start with a British one you already know in your own language.

  • Tap and hold a word to see its meaning in the built-in dictionary.
  • Try most books with a free sample before you buy.
  • You buy books on Amazon or read them with a paid Kindle Unlimited plan.

    Language Reactor

Language Reactor adds subtitles and a dictionary to British shows on Netflix and to British channels on YouTube. Replay a line until you can hear every word, then play the scene again without stopping.

    • See English subtitles beside a translation on Netflix and YouTube.
    • Pause and replay one line when it goes too fast.
    • The extension needs Chrome on a computer.
    • A learner on Reddit notes that the British shows on Netflix differ from country to country.
