Stories, audio, and videos can all help you learn Azerbaijani when you can follow what they mean. That is the idea behind comprehensible input: learning from Azerbaijani you can mostly understand. Azerbaijani written for learners is hard to find, and a reply on Reddit says there are no study guides sorted by level, as there are for many other languages.
These apps and sites give you Azerbaijani at your level, or help you follow the Azerbaijani you pick yourself. For courses, speaking practice, and tutors, see our Azerbaijani app comparison.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
Learn Azerbaijani with a path made just for you. Start with your level, what you like, and why you want to learn. Your path grows as you learn, with new lessons that fit you. Bubblegum also has news and stories, so you can read and listen to a mix of Azerbaijani about music, food, family, or daily life.
Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each lesson for your level, interests, and goals. If a sentence is hard to follow, just ask her to explain the words or the grammar.
The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help you read or watch Azerbaijani you found yourself. For a web page, a book, or a video you already picked, the tools in Read and Watch Azerbaijani You Choose are the better fit.
- Read and listen to lessons, news, and stories about things you like.
- New lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
- Ask Poppy for help as you read.
- Lesson audio uses AI voices, not recordings of Azerbaijani speakers.
- You cannot bring in your own books, articles, or videos.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

Free Lessons, Books, Films, and News
A few free sites are made for learners. GLOSS, from the US Defense Language Institute, has 106 free Azerbaijani lessons for reading and listening, sorted by level, from a talk with a taxi driver to news broadcasts. Learners on Reddit have suggested it for its Azerbaijani texts with matching audio. Azerbaijani.edu.az is a free site for foreigners and Azerbaijanis abroad, with reading and listening lessons from A1 to C1. You need an account, and one learner found that some of its lessons are not filled in yet. On YouTube, Learn Azerbaijani with Sevda, which several learners suggest, teaches everyday phrases, and Azerbaijani teachers post short lessons on Learn Azerbaijani Today!.
For reading, Azerbaijan's e-dərslik site has free school books for every grade from 1 to 11, including books for reading outside class. The site is all in Azerbaijani, and a learner on Reddit used it to find books from easy to hard.
For watching, Azərbaycanfilm, the national film studio founded in 1923, posts full Azerbaijani films on YouTube. Learners on Reddit suggest older classics such as Arşın mal alan and O olmasın, bu olsun. İctimai TV, Azerbaijan's public broadcaster, posts full episodes of its series on YouTube, including Əqrəb mövsümü, which several learners recommend. For long talks, Söhbətgah interviews guests about health, history, and relationships.
We found no site that writes the news in easy Azerbaijani. When you can follow news made for Azerbaijani readers, BBC News Azərbaycanca and Azadlıq Radiosu, the Azerbaijani service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, are free to read, and both post videos on YouTube.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to learn the Azerbaijani alphabet first?
It helps, and it is quick. Azerbaijani uses a Latin alphabet with 32 letters, and seven of them are new to English readers: ç, ə, ğ, ı, ö, ş, and ü. Bubblegum's free Azerbaijani Alphabet course teaches them in two short chapters, right in your browser.
Can Turkish help me understand Azerbaijani?
Yes, a lot. Turkish is one of Azerbaijani's closest relatives. A Turkish speaker on Reddit who moved to Azerbaijan says they understood about 60% at first and 80% after a month, and words from Russian were the hardest. Some words still fool Turkish speakers: kənd means village in Azerbaijani, while kent means city in Turkish.
Do these apps teach the Azerbaijani spoken in Iran?
The apps and sites on this page teach the Azerbaijani of the Republic of Azerbaijan, written in the Latin alphabet. In Iran, Azerbaijani is written in the Arabic script, so learners of South Azerbaijani need other books and media.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
The Azerbaijani Alphabet course on this site is also free and needs no account.
